O'BRYAN

Mr. Burnette started in 1982 with his debut-album , Doin' Alright , which title-track is a great orchestrated midtempo soulstepper .

A sample here from the album-opener : Right From The Start

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3...-02-04.mp3

Studio-bassist Melvin Lee Davis ( Lee Ritenour / Chaka Khan / Crusaders / etc )
was a composer-force , working with him .

His 2nd album ( 1983 ) , including the Soul Train theme .

One year later , he released the Be My Lover-album ,
including the Lovelite-single and x-rated video :

Another x-rated one from the same album

http://www.youtube.com/wa...n4ihvgH3eU

Tenderoni , from his last album ( 1986 ) .
After that album it became very quiet around him .

I thought it was 1981. I could be wrong though because I remember years of songs by school year. That particular year I was in the the ninth grade, 1981-1982. lol

I used to have the 7" for "Lovelite". That was a #1 R&B song in the states. You couldn't escape it.

I didn't have cable in the early eighties so my exposure to videos back then was limited to whatever was shown on Friday's 'New York Hot Tracks'. I don't remember it ever being aired on there.

When the songs were in style, I bought the 45 of "The Gigolo", then I bought his second album ("You and I" I think is the title), the 12 Inch of "Soul Train's A Comin'", and the 45 of "Lovelite". A few years ago, I bought the "Best Of" CD.

I remember when that song first came out. A DJ said O'Bryan spent thousands on that jacket.

O'Bryan said in a 1984 interview that he spent $5,000 for that Spanish troubador jacket, which would by today's standards would cost about twice that amount.

I was an O'Bryan fan growing up in the early '80s. In fact, I ended up on this site by doing a search on O'Bryan and found an O'Bryan thread. His style of music was similar to Babyface's, though he was not quite as commercially bent or as prolific as 'Face.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

I like his three main hits:

"The Gigolo" (1981)
"I'm Freaky" (1983)
"Lovelite" (1984)

I have his second album 'You and I' on vinyl. This is the one where he's wearing a red leather jacket on the cover. Also contains the slammin' "Soul Train's-A-Coming" theme song.

A huge hit in the early summer of '84...around the same time that Prince's "When Doves Cry" was taking the world by storm lol

I'm pretty sure that the single "The Gigolo" was released in late 1981.The album was probably released in early 1982,though.

Damn right! O'Bryan had some good material. I was a fan of the same songs you mentioned earlier. The bass synths on his songs were killer! I always wondered what happened to dude.

Great looking gimmick , and it was cool to see him wearing it in the Lovelite video .

My favorite song by O'bryan is "Lady I Love You". It is one of my all time favorite songs. I bought his greatest hits specifically for it. I wonder what he's up to today.
