The Pipettes

Has anyone heard of them or their album? I read a scathing review in The Village Voice a few weeks ago about their anti-feminist stance, but God help me if the single "Judy" isn't one of the most divine pop songs that I've heard in a long time.

They are very 60s girl group-ish. Exquisitely produced--at least the tracks I've heard so far. There are samples and videos in the links I provided.

I didn't think you would like them honestly. Phil has too many problems right now to produce anything. smile Even if he were producing records again, I think The Raveonettes is the first band on his waiting list.

I wonder if they knew the "implications" of their name in French lick

What does it mean in français?

Well pipe means "head" in French slang.
As of June 2006, the band are set to embark on a nationwide tour in support of their debut album, set for release on July 17, 2006. Their debut single, "Dirty Mind," reached #61
so it must be an homage to Prince!

I don't even know how their name is pronounced--if it's with a long or short 'i'.

yeah they don't seem like muy cuppa. they look cool though. phil spector has some serious issues but this does seem like the kind of band he would produce.

Sounds like an interesting job for the Holland-Dozier-Holland team.
I think they've got some experience with girl groups. wink

The tunes are cool, it's the arrangements that could use their touch.

I like their singles. I haven't picked up their album, but "It Hurts To See You Dance So Well" is such a wistful bit of indie pop. It's great.

Also, critics can kiss my ass, they *try* to spoil even the best of records. Pitchfork is one of them...

They're more listenable than CSS, IMO. But CSS is also hyped to high hell.

I can't help but think of the Spice Girls when I see and hear the Pipettes. They just give me that vibe, but in a good way.

You must be thinking of the Spice Girls' "Stop". That single had a very 60s girl group sound.

I'll be seeing CSS when they open for Ladytron later this month.

I adore The Pipettes. I play "Pull Shapes" on my net radio all the time. The whole album is great, IMHO.

whoknows

Saw them performing live on TV a few months ago. None of them can sing. They've got a good gimmick with the early 60s Shangrilas vibe they've got going on, but that's about all. A pretty contrived novelty group who will make a lot of noise for a while then disappear. And yes, there is something very Spice Girlsish about them, but the Spice Girls had better tunes.

As far as i'm aware it's only out in the UK, but you can purchase the download of the CD for pretty cheap from the UK download store www.7digital.com. That's where I got my copy.

For New Yorkers, import copies of "We Are The Pipettes" are available @ a great store called Other Music :: http://www.othermusic.com/

They have it for a nice price.

Yep, mostly that song. They definitely have the Phil Spector girl group-type thing going on. I'm getting all sorts of different action from them, holistically. And it's really a good thing 'cause you can't pin 'em down that easily.

Ladytron are really cool. You're going to have a good time @ that show.

That was probably my favorite Spice Girls song. boxed The Pipettes sound like a combo of 50s/60s girl groups. biggrin

I'm finding them increasingly annoying as they get gradually more well known. Unfortunately, there is a real comparison to the girls from the Sheila's Wheels adverts. 'It Hurts To See You Dance So Well' is a nice tune though.
