Listening to 1st Born Second right now, and damn, it's amazing. Seems like his second one got kicked, which is a tragedy really.

A Few that haven't been mentioned

Donny Hathaway
Elmore James
Howlin Wolf
Gill Scott-Heron (regarded as the forefather of hip-hop, but also a great soul singer)
Roger Daltrey (definitely the weak link of the who in the early, and later years, but in his prime had one of the best leonine roars in rock history)
Sly Stone (another person who may not have the most accomplished voice in the world but had one of the best idiosyncratic singing styles ever)
Paul McCartney-of all the Beatles his voice has surprised me most often...things would deteriorate in his solo career, but whad'rya gonna do
Phil Lynott-supremely underrated as singer, songwriter and bass player
Phillip Bailey (EWF)-one of the greatest falsettos ever
Buddy Guy-More well known for his incredible guitar playing, but also a fantastic blues and soul singer
Glen Goins (P-funk)
Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins (P-funk)
Todd Rundgren-an incredible range, and sounds so much like Carole King at times its frightening
Smokey Robinson

He's a fantastic vocalist. It seems like that gets overlooked since people always go on about his eclecticism and virtuosity as a player, and those things deserve to get talked about, of course - but the guy can really sing. As far as I could tell last week, there's been almost no deterioration either - he can still pull off the chorus to I Saw the Light without a hint of strain.

That's why, if you haven't already, you must check out...

...Nearly Human

Pretty much a live-in-studio recording where he only plays guitar on one tune. The rest of the album he concentrates on singing.

Many Todd-heads poo-poo this record but I really like it.

hmmm I occasionally see this lurking in the 2nd hand bins. I'll be sure to pick it up if I see it again. He did an a cappella album in the eighties, if I remember correctly - that's not what this is, right?

a cappella-is-not-one-word-edit.
and it has two 'p's.

No.

A Cappella...

...is a totally different concept.

All sounds are either voices or triggered by voices

It includes a unique take on The Spinner's Mighty Love though.

It's good that people are not saying Madonna or Janet, because those two do have quite a few fans on this forum. Having said that I do believe some people are saying Prince has a phenomenal voice because they are prince fans and this is a Prince board.

My answer was based on who I like listening to, not on who I think has the greatest range or whatnot

But the question wasn't really about who you really liked. It was about who you think has an awesome voice, regardless whether you like listening to them or not.
