Someone explain to me: Why do people like Bob Dylan?

Let me preface by saying this:

I am from Minnesota. I totally respect Bob Dylan as a musician. He is easily one of the best song writers who has ever lived. I also understand his historical importance in terms of music, and American History.

That being said, I've tried really hard to get into Bob Dylan and his music and I just cannot. Again, I respect him, but he does not appeal to me at all. I like many versions of his songs that other people have done, but by in large, I cannot get onto the Dylan train. Why not? What do those of you who love him dig so much? Is it a generational thing? Is it not funky enough for me? Explain to me, why do people like Bob Dylan.

Again, I respect the hell out of what he has done, so please don't take this as some kind of attack on him or his fans....

i never got into dylan and i've never gotten into morrissey, but i know people who are PASSIONATE about one or the other or both. i can appreciate them both as poets and i think they've both created really interesting images for themselves, but as far as the music goes, i don't get it. other people do. some people i know can't understand why i'm so nuts about prince and bowie. it's all relative, i suppose.

His music has never done much for me, but his songs do, and for me that's the appeal. Yeah he made a lot of crap from the late 70s through to the late 80s, but his early work and his most recent efforts are magnificent. It's not about his sound, but what he has to say. I have to respect him as a songwriter, it would be churlish not to.

i can't stand his voice but because a lot of his songs are so strong, i
just had to get used to it because his lyrics are great.

I can't even begin to explain this to you. If you don't get him, you just don't get him. However, I will say this - no one and I mean no one, writes lyrics like Bob. They have meaning and relevance and they all stand the test of time. Bob is a true musician who doesn't need fancy gimicks or sex appeal to sell his records.

I realize he is not to everyones taste, but if you take the time to really listen to his music and hear the lyrics, you just might start to understand why so many millions around the world consider him the best in his field.

If you are hearbroken, Time out of Mind is a great album to get. Other than that, I have no prior experience with Bob Dylan. Then my mom took me to see him this year and what I heard was 2 hours of great music. I didn't know most of the songs but it didnt' matter. I couldn't really understand what he was saying but for some reason, it still didn't matter. He's got an amazing band. You probably have to see it live to get into it. I had the same experience once with the Grateful Dead. I almost loved to hate them, then I saw them and my mind was changed. So go check him out if he comes to town at a AAA baseball park near you for $60. Pretty cheap and worth it for a legend. He's also got some great opening acts with him, including Jimmy Vaughn (Stevie's brother)

"Bob is a true musician who doesn't need fancy gimicks or sex appeal to sell his records.."

But isn't that in itself kind of his gimick? He's the simple folk icon who just needs a stool and a guitar. I think Bob Dylan is more consience of his image than people think. He's the prototype singer/songwriter and I do think he is careful to uphold that.

There are certain critical darlings that do nothing for me and Bob Dylan is one of them. I do like the remakes of many of his songs though, Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. The other major critical darling I cannot get into no matter how much I try is Bruce Springsteen. I guess there is just not enough blues, funk, soul, hard rock influence in these folks for me. I appreciate strong lyrics, but the music has to have some soul to it otherwise I cannot connect. There are many other popular artists I cannot get into either, but Dylan and Springsteen are two who plague me because they are so critically lauded. I also can't seem to really grasp the Grateful Dead, but that's another story.

Peace,
Scott

I really never paid much attention to Bob. I knew he was all legendary and whatnot, but I never delved into his catalogue.

Then I saw him do a prefect set at Glastonbury years ago. Between him and a bottle of wine I was able to completely forget about all the muddy wasteland I'd been tromping thru for days and it was just a magical performance.

After that I meant to devote some time to him but it still hasn't happened lol But based on that one performance I do at least KINDA get why he gets the love that he does.
