L.A.-Area Concert Shut Down, 30 Arrested in Melee

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A concert featuring rapper L.L. Cool J was canceled on Sunday night after members of rival gangs took over the stage and began clubbing people with metal bars, police said on Monday.



Police shut down the event at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in the Orange County city of Irvine, about 40 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, after security guards lost control of the crowd of 15,000, a police spokesman said.

About 30 people were in custody on Monday on allegations ranging from drug possession to parole violations, police said. Three people suffered minor injuries after being crushed by the crowd.

The melee at the daylong concert began during L.L. Cool J's performance when taunts between two rival groups escalated to violence, police said.

When the rapper stopped singing because of the disruption, the groups rushed onto the stage, police said. They grabbed metal bars used to build concert seating and began hitting people indiscriminately, police said.

More than 100 police officers responded and closed the show down before the next act could perform.

L.L. Cool J, whose true name is James Todd Smith, called the melee "just appalling."

"I think that it's just a prime example of how much, how we as black men really need ... someone around us who can guide us in the right direction and how we are so in desperate need of attention that we would ruin an event just to feel important," the singer told a local TV station.

As long as this crap goes on, there isn't gonna be many rap shows. Same goes for Woodstock after the last one, which I could care less, but I would like to see more rap shows in Boston but almost 85% end with somebody dead or arrested. Even Marky Mark was banned for life after his crew stabbed a bouncer a few years ago.
