Richard Thompson's "I AGREE WITH PAT METHENY"

check this link, but here's the lyrics.

I Agree Wit Pat Metheny

I agree with Pat Metheny
Kenny's talents are too teeny
He deserves the crap he's going to get
He overdubbed himself on Louis
What a musical chop suey
Raised his head above the parapet

Well Louis Armstrong was the king
He practically invented swing
Hero of the twentieth century
He did duets with many a fella
"Fatha" Hines, Big Hoagy, Ella
Strange he never thought of Kenny G

A meeting of great minds, how nice
Like Einstein and Sporty Spice
Digitally fused in an abortion
Kenny fans will doubtless rave
While Satchmo turns inside his grave
Soprano man's bit off more than his portion

Oh brainless pentatonic riffs
Display our Kenny's arcane gifts
But we don't care, his charms are so beguiling
He does play sharp, but let's be fair
He has such lovely crinkly hair
We hardly notice, we're too busy smiling

How does he hold those notes so long?
He must be a genius. Wrong!
He just has the mindlessness to do it
He makes Britney sound like scat
If this is jazz I'll eat my hat
An idle threat, I'll never have to chew it

So next time you're in a rendezvous
And Kenny's sound comes wafting through
Don't just wince, eliminate the cause
Rip the tape right off the muzak
Pull the plug, or steal a fuse, Jack
The whole room will drown you in applause

Yes, Kenny G has gone too far
The gloves are off, it's time to spar
Grab your hunting rifle, strap your Colt on
It's open season on our Ken
But I await the moment when
We lay off him and start on Michael Bolton

I agree with Pat Metheny
Kenny's talents are too teeny

this is something I was hoping would never Ever get Mentioned Because Kenny G truly turned my stomach with that Sorry ASS Cover or Sample or whatever He called Himself trying to do.I Read how Pat Metheny Nailed His Ass&Applauded Loud,Loud,Loud.Kenny G Holds a Note like Ralph the Doorman from the Jeffersons use to Hold His Hand out:and George thankfully Slammed the Door in His Face.well that's what I do with Kenny G's One Note Ass Playing Self.He wasn't always like that though.when He was with Kashief He actually Played more than that.but Formula took Over&that Bum has Been a One Note Johnny on the spot IMHO.

This is still an issue?

Is this the guitar-playing Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention of the late 60s that went on to a solo career?
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Honestly, I don't know, but it is the Richard Thompson of the duo Rhichard & Linda Thompson.
Point is not so much PM & KG's tirade, but more that Thompson wrote the song.
Quite funny donchathink? lol
I'm not sure when this popped up, but I hear Thompson has sung it in concert, though he may
not have recorded it.

Later

Yeah it's the same guy from Fairport Convention. He's married to Linda.
"Learn something new every day", eh?

This is a new song on Thompson's cd due out in January 2003.

Yeah, I've been hanging out at Pat Metheny's website for a few years now. And I remember when Pat nailed Kenny on the Q&A section on the website from a fan back in 2000. It caused an uproar within the jazz community. The text from his website made it's way into jazz magazines. Pat's a nice guy(I rapped with him one time after a PMG show)he totally caught people off guard with his verbal assault of Kenny's music.

I felt that Pat was right in his assessment of Kenny's music. What particularly angered Pat was Kenny's lame rereading of Louis Armstrong "What A Wonderful World". Pat called for a boycott of that Kenny G song from jazz fans...asking them not to buy the single.

As a jazz fan, it's amusing to me when I visit people's cribs and they tell me that they have some "jazz" in their collection and then most of their collection is stuff like Kenny G, Bonny James...URRRGGHHH!!! But if you let them tell it ..they know what's popping in jazz.

Furthermore, I hate those smooth jazz radio stations. Every now and then they'll jam something like Weather Report's "Birdland" or Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" but other than that...ZZZ!!!

Actually Richard and Linda have been divorced for a while now. That is, unless they got back together and I don't know about it.
