80s R&B classic of the day: "You Are" by Lionel Richie (1982)

music you are the sun,you are the rain, that makes my life this foolish game
you need to know I love you so,and I'd do it all again and again
oh oh oh...oh oh oh...oh oh oh...

http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search=

Takes you back to a time when Lionel was still soulful, before he started putting out commercial pop crap like "Say You Say Me" and "Dancing On The Ceiling" disbelief

I'd rather be taken back to the time when Lionel was still funky confused
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

You must be referring to his Commodores days in the 70s...

"Gimme My Mule"
"Slippery When Wet"
"Girl I Think The World About You"
"Come Inside"
"Machine Gun"

I hear ya! lol

why does it have to be only the funky songs? what about songs like "Easy" and "Still", that's still classic Lionel.

I would have to agree with you to a point. Lionel Richie's "You Are" is more pop than straightforward soul music -- in fact, when I do hear the song on the radio it's typically on an adult contemporary-type station. It's flexible enough to play on a soul music format without cringing, but IMO it's pushing it to call it a soul music classic. Compared to a lot of his '80s post-Commodores solo stuff, it is relatively soulful -- but that merely shows you how far pop Richie's music had gone.

Lionel Richie singing "Still" is not that much different than his post-Commodores stuff like "Hello," but I understand what you mean. I personally would rather hear ballads like "Just to Be Close to You," "Easy," "Zoom" and "Sweet Love" -- very accessible songs that were not overly maudlin.

Same here! I do have the 45 of "You Are" though....and "Truly". lol Hey, at least there were tons of others that were still putting out funk after Lionel got all adult contemporary so he wasn't really influencing droves of people to damage music as a whole.....unlike a certain female I can think of that came around a few years later. evillol

Love Lionel Ritchie's songs regardless of what people say about him-he has been one of the best songwriters around.
