Robin Thicke Prince comparisons???

Robin Thicke - The Evolution of Robin Thicke (Star Trak)
By: Jozen Cummings

February 22, 2006

A Prince-like Thicke scores one for blue-eyed soul.

It’d be simple to dismiss Robin Thicke’s presence on the scene as another white soul-singing gimmick. But not this time. The singer/producer’s sophomore album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, is a finely groomed collection of Latin-tinged rhythms, bare-bones balladry, and psychedelic grooves.

The first single, “Wanna Love You Girl,” featuring Pharrell, places Thicke’s angelic falsetto (sometimes compared to Justin Timberlake’s) over Skateboard P’s pulsating drums and slick violins. But it’s “Lost Without You,” a sexy, finger-snapping bossa nova track on which Thicke croons his heart away, that shows he’s more akin to Prince than fellow blue-eyed soul-man Timberlake.

Occasionally, Thicke’s need to be eclectic backfires. “High School Man,” a funky blend of ’70s rock ’n’ roll and hip hop, devolves into a repetitive tale of juvenile hateration. Such rare inconsistencies aside, Thicke shows genuine passion and talent throughout. From the jubilant, gospel-flavored “Tie My Hands” to the seductive chill of “Teach U a Lesson,” The Evolution shows he’s able to bring his artistry full circle.

"I believe if I was black nobody would compare me to Justin Timberlake. I feel like, if he’s Michael Jackson, I’m Prince. He’s an amazing talent and he’s going to be making music for a long time, and so am I…"

Can anyone explain to me why people keep comparing Robin Thicke to Prince? Or why he is comparing himself to Prince? I've heard some of Robin's music and I JUST DON'T GET IT!!!

Sorry if Thicke has already been discussed. I couldn't search.

We'll see for ourselves cause I saw a sign today that his CD is coming out on October 3rd. I love "Wanna Love You Girl". I must say that song was hot.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Stupid journalists.
He sounds absolutely NOTHING like Prince.
I was talking about his new song/video Lost Without You on another thread and I made the point that even though its in falsetto it DOESN'T sound like Prince AT ALL, unlike Justin Timberlake's "Damn Girl".

I feel like Wanna Love You Girl has been out for over a year. ’Bout time the album drop. Love the new tune. I also didnt realize he did the vocals on that Switch remix by Will Smith.

I dont know the name of the song, but the vidoe featuring him on an island (or beach) is awful. I dont get the hype.

The only hype I can see is that he is Alan Thicke's son.....and that isn't saying much.

lol I can't get past the fact that he looks just like his dad Alan. It's kinda creepy seeing the dad from "Growing Pains" singing in falsetto.

With the haircut there are times when he reminds me of young Pierce Brosnan. I think hes a pretty decent songwriter and I’m curious what the album will sound like. The songs I’ve heard so far I like.

I totally agree. I think they remixed it and did another video for the summer Fab 5 thing on MTV. Whatever the case, I JUST DON'T GET IT! I really haven't seen or heard anything that merits the hype that he is receiving. He is just another in a line on non-descript "artists" these days. The Prince comparisons are waaaaay off base. His singing/songwriting is no where near in the same league as Prince's. Also, he is just plain boring. There's nothing exciting about him. As sexydancer said, no one compares to Prince. biggrin

Thicke has some fun songs. Not feeling the Pharrel stuff though.

He ain't in Prince's league, but he's got something.

lol Maybe you should give it three years. I heard it when it was released, but I didn't get it either. Listened to it a few weeks back and finally got it.
