Beyonce expected to soar past 600,000 with B'Day

New Columbia Record a Slam Dunk at #1, Audioslave #2

September 6, 2006

Steve Barnett’s Team Columbia are hitting their groove in the nick of time.

With new Sony Music chief Rob Stringer in the building (and unlike some colleagues, not taking credit for the surge), the suddenly mean machine on Madison is kicking into gear, following up this week’s chart-topping Bob Dylan album with what looks like another huge album on deck in Beyonce’s B’Day, which is on target to soar past 600k and could approach 650k, based on first-day sales reports from our crack retail reporters around this great country of ours.

All that and a $1 million 1959 Rolls Royce from bf Jay-Z makes for a pretty nifty birthday, if you ask us.

The week’s other big album, Audioslave’s Revelations (Epic/Interscope) appears pretty good in a down market for rock, with a first-week total estimated between 130-140k. Sanctuary Music Group’s metal perennials Iron Maiden is up next with 60k, give or take a screaming guitar solo and a medieval torture device.

Meanwhile, back to reality. As we head into the prime selling season, the industry was down between 1-2% last week, down more than 10% from same week last year and now down more than 5.5% to year-to-date.

Love Beyonce, but it'll really surprise me if this happens. The CD is terrible and sounds rushed sad .

Okay, the radio since bumped the estimation up to 600K.

I read a blip today allegedly stating that the label didnt have much to do with the project, that it was JayZs baby and he wanted to go forward with it despite the label not being happy with it. Dont know if its true or not. shrug

Yeas, that is true. The label was supposed to put lots of time (and money) into the project. The album was actually supposed to be released in 2007. Beyonce had other ideas, she did the album in 2 weeks, and called it B'Day.

Im not surprised. She's really popular right now. Didnt Janet do over 600,000 the first week for 2001's All For You?

She obviously follwing Jayz's old motto of an album a year. she has stated she wants to release an album a year either solo or with DC until she has kids, when she plans to slow down (Can some replace her birth control pill with a tic tac, or get a pin and go through Jayz' condom box, the world would thak you) she has managed that for the last 7 years. she has released an album every year if I'm not mistaken

Big deal bored

Today's artists always sell a shitload of CDs in their first week, but then a few weeks later, they're off the charts already. There's nothing exciting going on in pop music anymore. It's like fast food...fans buy this crap, then they quickly move onto the next thing.Justin will sell alot of CDs in his first week too,but in a few weeks from now,his CD will be forgotten too. This is nothing more than over-produced,manufactured,disposable pop crap that won't even be remembered a year from now.I'm glad that I don't listen to the radio anymore.

Well for Beyonce's sake, I hope the album sells well, because she's been on promotion overload.
