After listening to the remasters, I've realized 'Pornography' is my second favorite Cure album.

What's your fave?

It's funny...I know how great Porn is. And I know how lauded it is among Cure fans. But it's just nowhere near my favorite.

I must admit, I'm a little afraid of it. Maybe I should give it some more love.

'The Head On The Door' is still tops (although I haven't gotten to that remaster yet). That was my first Cure record and it will always be my favorite.

I think it's the tribal drumming on 'Pornography' that gets me. It's similar to the Banshees' 'Juju' album. And "A Strange Day" is now one of my top five favorite Cure tracks. I love how on the album, it's followed by "Cold" which is almost the same song but slower and bleaker. I love how it drags--so beautifully gloomy.

Totally concur on "A Strange Day". It's one of my favorite Cure songs to play on guitar too. I think it's one of the few Cure songs that would almost sound at home on any of their albums.

And what are you waiting for with the Head remaster? Dig in! That's the first one I put on and I haven't gone a day without it since. biggrin

I think it's the soundtrack to the short film played before the Pornography shows, a la "Carnage Visors" for the Faith tour.

Yeah, I think I read that in the liner notes, but still--that's one strange piece of music right there. Not like Carnage Visors at all which I think is quite nice. smile

I'm a bad Cure fan. I've had the Porn remaster since the day it came out but still haven't listened to it yet.

As long as all of the songs get a proper remaster, I'll be fine. biggrin

Would you consider 'Greatest Hits' to be part of the whole remaster series, though? Do you think the sound is even as good? I never owned 'Japanese Whispers' the first time around...I'm very curious about it, even though I've heard about everything on it. Maybe I'll get a used copy sometime just for kicks. shrug

I'm not sure. Haven't listened in some time. But I'd guess that the sound levels are at least comparable.

Even though Japanese Whispers is a collection of singles, it definitely holds together well as an album and has its own sound.

The cover is pretty cool too. biggrin

Ok, please forgive my ignorance. What exactly is a remaster? How exactly does it differ from the original?

They were drawn by children related to the band.

Generally, they go back to the source tapes of the recording and scrub them up in a number of ways - clarity, volume, depth, etc.

Think of it as akin to restoring a classic painting.

Here's what wikipedia has to say:

Wow, that was really helpful. biggrin It's interesting to note that many of the first CD's were pressed from mediocre "masters". I think I'll start a new thread about this.
