Korn's self-titled debut (1994) Believe it or not, there was actually a period in these guys' career where they WEREN'T "that nu-metal band all the kiddies love" and "those MTV darlings that sing "Freak On A Leash"". Rather, they were a genuine hard-rock outfit that cooked up unstoppable, head-banging grooves and screamed/slithered emotional, cathartic songs. Their sound was highly unique for its time and inspired a whole slew of lame imitators later on, from Limp Bizkit to Linkin Park to Slipknot to... well, all the rest. Unlike on subsequent releases, Jonathan Davis actually sounds like a tormented headcase here, and the band sounds raw and energetic (awesome drums!). The guitar work isn't exactly complex, but neither was Nirvana's Nevermind's, and that's a classic. Just thought I'd start an appreciation thread after buying and listening to this sucker today. If you think Korn are "just another worthless faux-metal act", take a listen to this. It's ass-rocking stuff.

After this...everything else was just so-so. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"
