Downloading killed the concept CD? I was reading an article about downloading taking over CD in sales ( as CD's did to both cassettes and albums). Now is here is the only disturbing thing to me. Will this end doing a concept LP? As it stands in the urban/pop world of music. Everyone works with the same producers and writers to ensure a hit. No one makes that CD that only they could have made anymore.
Like if you look at Mary J " My Life" for example. That CD sounde like she sat in a basement crying to Puff over K-Ci. It feels like had she not made that CD no one else could have, more of a statement than a hit machine. D'Angelo Voodoo, Prince 'SOTT', Maxwell "Embrya" Rick James ' Street Songs' same deal. Like Kyle West only worked with Al B. Sure. I could go on and on but the focus has shifted to making some 'hot' records with hot producers and guests as opposed to making tight LP from the heart. (NOT DISSING EITHER ARTIST IN MY NEXT STATEMENT) You could switch all the songs from the new Mariah with the new Mary J and it would still be the same hit record. With downloading you can pick and choose what songs you want and maybe miss that 'other' song off the LP that would really move you. I also note that a big reason that people are downloading music instead of buying it, is the lack of effort that goes into a LP. So I ask you all do you think we will see a time good masterpieces again? | |

If you asked me, downloading was the result of poorly made music done by overpaid, non-talented people who call themselves artists. I remember when I was a teenager, it was nice to purchase an album and later a cd, and all of the cuts on it were great. Now, you are lucky if an entire 10 song cd has two to three cuts on it that are good. I download a lot of songs. These songs however. are songs that are out of print and cannot be found anymore. If the powers that be, want the downloading to stop then do your job. Go out and push the envolope when it come to finding talent. That's what I don't like about downloading. CDs are bad enough for shrinking down these covers to mere thumbnails of the original LP size... | |

I don't think downloading files in separate tracks would kill the idea of a concept album though.
That just reminds me of Prince releasing Lovesexy non-tracked because skipping on CDs made it too songs-focused. We all know you can listen to a CD or a group of mp3s from start to finish. | |

That's what I don't like about downloading. CDs are bad enough for shrinking down these covers to mere thumbnails of the original LP size... For me, who cares about the album art....I just care about the music. If I want visuals I would just download the cover or scan the cd cover. Relatively speaking, hardly anyone was making concept CDs even before downloading really started. A while back, Apple reported that more than half of the purchases on the iTunes Music Store were full albums. downloading has its good and bad points...personally I LOVE IT !!!!! There are so may old albums that I have that i either lost or want in a format that i can carry around with me on my laptop or when i go jogging...also there are loads of albums/songs I may never have gotten a chance to "sample/checkout" because i dont like the artist enough to spend $20.00 just to see if i like their music...downloads give me the chance to test it out before i lose my money on garbage and NEVER support an artist ' music again...deleting the tracks is much easier than living with some bullshit that pisses you off whenever you look at it in a pile of other crap you dont listen to...  | |

well considering that prince released his first real concept album
in 2001 as a download only before the retail release, i'd say no. 
seriously, i hate what downloading is doing to "albums" as we know or should i say knew them. yet. i'm just as much a part of the problem since i no longer buy albums by artists i'm not crazy about, i just download 2 or 3 nice songs from the album and don't need the rest. bjork, beck, prince, tori amos, radiohead etc will always get my full attention and i will buy their albums soon as released. but since the downloading started i haven't bought 1 single album that is gathering dust on my shelves anymore. and that's a good thing imo. no more wasted money on shitty albums. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps | |
