Where is Kenneth Gamble,Leon Huff and Thom Bell when we really need them? Bring back the Philly Sound!!

I'm sick of the sorry state of today's R&B.Forget R.Kelly and Ciara,I wanna hear the classic "Philly Soul" sound of the 70s.I've been listening to alot of this music lately. This is REAL SOUL MUSIC,written and produced by people who actually know how to make music.Kenneth Gamble,Leon Huff and their frequent collaborator Thom Bell gave us some of the most amazing soul music ever.I wonder what these guys are up these days? Are they still making music? It would be interesting if somebody like Mariah Carey would go into the studio with these guys. For once, she would make a REAL soul album.I want to start a petition to get these guys back on the scene, writing and producing again.Let's bring back the Philly Sound! Who's with me on this?

I didn`t grew up with this music (i wasn`t even born lol ), but in the last year or so, i`ve discovered a lot of good music that came out of Philadelphia.

Of course, there`s Teddy Pendergrass, who had amazing material, probably mainly written by Gamble, Huff and Bell, and not to mention a GREAT voice!!

Another one of my favorite singers, Phyllis Hyman, made some of her best music after signing to the label.

I like to think of the Philly artists as not only singers, but stylists, just think of JEAN CARNE, i think what made the philly sound so good, so unique, was the combination of Gamble/Huff/Bell and the "songstylists", if someone like Usher or Beyonce would team up with them, it wouldn`t be the same.

It`s like with motown, which defined the 60s, the Philly sound DEFINED THE 70s, i don`t think it can be re-created.

HOWEVER, i do like the idea of MC working with them, and not to mention ANITA BAKER, that would be brilliant... cloud9

Their's was music with a message, class and great chord changes. Along with Thom Bell and Linda Creed.

Jean Carne and Phyliss don't get enough credit also. Great voices.

Somebody put on Jean's "When Love Calls"

biggrin Ndeed!!

biggrin Thom Bell and Linda Creed, One of the best songwriting duos of all time!!

Also, Props to keyboardist/writer/producer Dexter Wansel:

Dexter's tunes often went beyond The classic early to mid- 70's Philly sound, he yielded great R&B classics like these:

"The Sweetest Pain", "Together once again",

" Nights Over Egypt" (for the Jones Girls),

"If Only You Knew" (for Patti Labelle),

"Living All Alone" (for Phyllis Hyman),

"Hurry Up This Way Again" (for The Stylistics)

"I've Been A Fool For You" (for Miles Jaye),

"Keep On Dancin'" , "Living Together" (for The Jacksons)

"I Love You Anyway" (for Dee Dee Sharp Gamble)

"Mysteries of the World" (for MFSB)

"I'm in Love Once again", "You are all I Need " (for Jean Carne)

Then, Of Course, there's the excellent team of Hawes, Jefferson & Simmons!! Put together by Thom Bell, Bruce, Joe, and Charles wrote some of Philly's greatest hits, especially for the Spinners!

some of Hawes, Jefferson and Simmons' Hits include:

One of a Kind (Love Affair)

A Mighty Love

They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)

Brandy(for the O'Jays)

Sadie

Love Don't Love Nobody

Even it isn't part of the Philly Sound I'd like to add Skip Scarborough to the list.

I love this song, but then i love every song Anita has recorded, seriously, if you put on any of her albums, you can play it all the way through, without skipping...
It`s just her voice, she`s a stylist....

Philly was pure class but I would also like to hear some real raw souther soul. I'm talking about the Stax and Atlantic Records sound - I think these were the labels that shaped the sound of the 50's and 60's.
I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

DO YOU ALL REALLY WANT THE PHILLY SOUND BACK...

EVEN IF DOES COME BACK YOU'RE GOING TO KNOCK IT

"ohhh, this is a cheap imitation."

[b]"they will never do it like they USED to do."

Isn't that what Neo-Soul is considered today? oh, but i forgot it's new music, so it's not as good as when YOU were younger.

You will never find The Philly Sound because the shit you're searching for is in your fucking heads.

You can't "bring back" quote/unquote "good music," if you've given up on it.

Today's so-called "neo-soul" is nothing like the 70s Philly Sound,so please stop it with your lame comparisons.

You won`t regret it... I have to get the second Carne cd, "Sweet and wonderful/When i find you love" and just for fun, her "Carne sings McCoy"...

Yeah, the 2-for1 albums are great, I still haven`t gotten Pendergrass` "Teddy Pendergrass/Life is a song" yet, i got some catching up to do...

For news on Philly releases, i would recommend the site soulmusic.com, which carries Rhino handmade titles, and they ship to Europe!! dancing jig
