Jay-Z Touring To Spread Water Crisis Awareness

Jay-Z Touring To Spread Water Crisis Awareness

Def Jam president Jay-Z will trek to several countries plagued by the world's water crisis for the MTV documentary "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life," which will air Nov. 24 on MTV stations worldwide.

The rapper announced the international tour, which kicks off in Turkey, at a press conference today (Aug. 9) at the United Nations in New York, where he was joined by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and MTV president Christina Norman. Jay-Z plans to visit devastated regions and interact with families who suffer from the lack of safe drinking water.

"In the beginning, when I was going out on a world tour, I was going out to play music," he said. "But I said to myself, I can't go to these places I've been and not go out and see the people that have been touched by my music for over 10 years. From that morphed, 'Well, I'm not just going to go over there and rap to them.' I'm going to help and see what I can do in these areas."

MTV will also offer additional educational and Internet resources as part of the initiative. "By allowing MTV to document his journey, Jay-Z will be mobilizing a whole new generation of young people who may not be familiar with the water crisis to learn about and take action to help those suffering," said Norman.

"Every 15 seconds a child dies from not having clean water," said Jay-Z. "That's just staggering numbers and I figured that if the information was out and young people knew that these problems exist that they'd get involved."

When asked whether he plans to rap about his experience, a la Kanye West's "Diamonds From Sierra Leone," Jay-Z replied, "I believe Kanye made that song after he became truly entrenched in the problem and he learned about it enough to make a song about it ... I'm inspired by culture and by the things about me. I can't say yes but that's usually how it happens."

Well Jay Z needs to do something to "redeem" himself, since that whole boycott cristal thing blew up in his face, and made him seem like some "rich" celebrity voicing opinions on Mindless issues, so i guess this is his redemption

The fact that it only made the news for one day could be a sign that it blew up in his face. Also, the fact that no one really seemed to give a shit what he had to say about Cristal and millions are still buying and enjoying it tells me that very few people take note of anything he has to say.

I still don't really see how that blew up though.

As dumb as a crusade to take on, he did have some points.

yes please.

interestingly enough, as Rhondab said, this still doesn't explain how it blew up in his face. I smell some more org hating going on. If he wouldn't have said anything about the Cristal situation, then people would still be complaining about how foolish the hip hop world still would have exploited it. Jay-Z takes a stand against it (no matter how simple the situation was) and people still aren't satisfied. I think people just love to complain on this site about dumb shit. rolleyes

Well the fact that this is dumb shit is the deal. I could care less about Jay Z as a person, but i think when we bitch and moan about people like Oprah and Bill Cosby not reppin "black" people, whats the alternative, a protest against cristal. I mean in a day and age when there is so much people can do in the arts, like protest Iraq, Protest the Israel conflict, raise awareness for Aids in africa or the problems in the Sudan. But a protest against Cristal, thats your stand? And as far as it blowing up in his face well it did, because Cristals stocks went up after it happend, and then Beyonce starting getting negative press about PETA and then the whole Jay z/Beyonce/Rihannna issue that somehow has now gone from nothing, to actaully something.

yeah...but beyonce and peta have nothing to do with Jay and Cristal.

It was a silly stand but like I said...I SORTA, in a tiny way, get it.
