I just need to get this off my chest about LAURIE ANDERSON

I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. WOMAN.

She's funny.
She's witty.
She's a great musician.
She's a wonderful visual artist.
She's a super-engaging lyricist and writer.
She's a fabulous live performer, whether she's performing music or a spoken-word show.
She can do political material without sounding preachy, and she can do heavy/intense material without it getting sappy.
She's an inventor (the tapebow violin, the bodysuit/drum set, etc.).
She's collaborated with some very cool people (Burroughs, Eno, Nile Rodgers, Adrian Belew, Peter Gabriel).
She's Lou Reed's significant other, a Buddhist, and a Chicago native.

She's just damn cool.

Okay, I feel better now. smile

She's not a bad stand-in either...

...I saw her accept the Les Paul Award for David Byrne at last year's TEC Awards in NYC.

Well it was kind of a formal event. smile

She was quite striking onstage.

that's the first current picture i've seen of laurie in over 20 years of being a fan in which her hair didn't look like a porcupine with bedhead. i just thought it was permanently stuck that way. lol

though there are old pics of her from the '70s where she has really long brown hair...back when she did a performance piece where she wore a pair of skates encased in ice blocks, and she'd play violin out in the street until the ice melted. god bless performance artists! giggle

tA, have you heard much of laurie's stuff? i have a feeling you'd be into her later work, like 'strange angels' or 'life on a string'. the latter album even has some collaboration with van dyke parks. smile

Honestly, I haven't in any great detail.
When I saw the thread I was thinking she's someone I need to dig into.

Btw, would've been nice if I could've attended the recent SY performance and had you as a blow-by-blow commentator. wink

(sans the potential heat-stroke of course)

she's got a pretty good anthology on rhino called "talk normal" that i think goes up to her "bright red" album, and covers a lot of ground with a nice booklet/liner notes essay. it's a good start.

my fave albums by her are "home of the brave" (a semi-live album produced by nile rodgers w/ adrian belew and william burroughs making appearances) and "bright red" (produced mostly by brian eno, with TONS of great music to be had from it including a duet with lou reed).

and i wish you could have seen SY with me too...thurston killed on guitar from beginning to end! bow

I have owned a copy of Trout Mask Replica for 15 years, and I have tried and tried and tried to listen to it because every review I've ever read has told me that it is a profound work of genius. Unfortunately all I ever hear is 70 or so minutes minutes of rudderless, disjointed attempts at the blues with uniquely unpleasant vocals on top.

I suppose the deficiency is mine, because I'm sure it's the case that Trout Mask is a great album, and my musical vocabulary is too limited to fully appreciate what's contained. Bottom line; I've received absolutely no pleasure whatsoever from that record.

You're not alone. It's a hard swallow.

What's amazing to me is that these were not willy-nilly performances but seriously rehearsed "compositions".

I still feel like I've failed a rite of passage by being unable to crack that nut.

I'm done jacking the thread now. Carry on.
