HeyJude

Neko Case

I can count the number of alt-country acts I've enjoyed on one hand, but I'm loving Neko Case! Anyone have the scoop on her background?

She started out in Canada (though she's originally from the US) playing in an indie-punk band called Meow (I think). I saw them a few times, but they never made much of an impression on me. I saw them in local clubs several times and thought they were a fairly non-descript run-of-the mill club act.

I'm actually a very big country fan, but I'm seemingly part of the small minority that isn't that wild about Fox Confessor. I enjoy the punky energy of her previous solo albums much more than Confessor. I don't actively dislike it - I just find it a touch too sedate, and find that too much of the album drifts by (in an agreeable manner, mind you) without leaving a firm impression on me.

If you haven't done so already, I'd definitely recommend seeking out her earlier records. Furnace Room Lullaby in particular is an album that I just love to death - not a bad song on it.
