Prince fans are still mad at D for "Untitled". Prior to that, they believed that Prince was the only one who could drop something like that till D showed them differently. Ever since then its been...well. you see.
I'll be peeping his next venture out for sure. The haters will, too. They can say what they want. They'll be listening. nod

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, BK, but really, I want someone to explain to me why "Untitled" is D'Angelo ripping off/aping/copping/imitating Prince. I just don't see/hear it!

To The Lab From Rehab

D'Angelo is ready for his close-up -- again.

The neo-soul crooner who put many in a tizzy --by simulating a sex act in his music video for the song 'Untitled' (How Does It Feel) -- is staging a comeback.

'BV Newswire' has learned that the Virginia native, legally known as Michael Eugene Archer, is fresh from a stint at the Antigua outpost of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Centre, where he was drying out from substance abuse.

And he's ready for business.

Angie Stone's "baby's daddy" is in The Big Apple this week collaborating on new tracks with Common and Q-Tip, respectively, for their forthcoming album projects.

The 32-year-old 'Devil's Pie' singer also took meetings with Virgin Records urban music honcho Jermaine Dupri to explore ways to re-ignite his once thriving career. Veteran music executive Gary Harris (with whom he created magic with 1994’s groundbreaking 'Brown Sugar') is said to be working closely with the two-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter.

High powered music industry titan Irving Azoff (Christina Aguilera, Lenny Kravitz, Seal) is also in the mix.

The news of D'Angelo's return to music should be welcome balm to his legion of fans (who helped propel his two studio albums 'Brown Sugar' and 'Voodoo' to platinum sales). His most recent buzz includes run-ins with the law for a 2005 traffic violation and a 2002 charge for assault and resisting arrest.

cool

As I'm reading this...I just got finished watching D'Angelo's performance of "Devil's Pie" and I'm laughing @ the naysayers. That performance was singlehandedly one of the most incredible performances by a black artist on national TV - ever! If you are a true student of funk and soul then you would easily recognize the early funk/rock vibe of Funkadelic, Band Of Gypsys, Cameo, and Dirty Mind-era Prince that was in that performance. It's from the MTV Movie Awards of 2000 and he was riding high with the success of the Voodoo. See, to really appreciate D'Angelo you gotta go to the show, or at least have witnessed it. The Voodoo tour carried all the elements and D'Angelo borrowed a lot from James, Prince, George, and Fela Kuti. Let's take our minds off the long hiatus for a second and remember this artist as a cat who took some very necessary chances in soul music during a time when many were forced to believe that Sisqo should be within the same sentence as someone like D'Angelo. D'Angelo gots some demoms to face and conquer and we can only hope that he pulls back in a major way - I know he can. All the greats that went through the fire always come back with some incredible music doubling as a big middle finger to the doubters. You gotta think....this man came into the industry during a time when there was a dire need of something new and truly soulful and dude came through with the Tribe Called Quest style production stacking live instrumentation on top and had the songwriting to go with it. The Prince influence was more than obvious, but it was done so incredibly slick that you really could not front! We would have killed to have Prince do an album like that back then; like if Prince would have did some reverse Milli Vanilli shit an actually replaced D'Angelo vocals and instrumentation with his own and dropped that album in place of "The Gold Experience" (all of this of course is just to make an example. We all know too well that Prince would never have to do something like that, but that's simply an easy way to describe D'Angelo's vibe during that time.....). His vocal and musical arrangements on that album took things to the next level and inspired other different soul artists to remain "different"(Musiq, Dwele, John Legend, trust me....D'Angelo convinced a lot of cats that they can be themselves or "like him" if you take a look at some of these cats - without saying no names...). The word for the longest time is that he's been honing his guitar chops and he wants to come back showcasing those skills and putting them up front in his new music. I say all of this because it all goes back to that performance I mentioned earlier in this post. He took it there and I feel like we are going to get an album showing more of that side of him in addition to the organic soul stuff that he normally does. We all know about his problems with the drugs and the alcohol, but I also know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has had his struggles with the label in allowing him to do what he really wants to do which is put out an album of his own personal liking. That will make anyone wihtdrawn and frustrated to a point of self-destruction and dude had got to have his reasons for being incognito for so long. He's not so concerned with making his label or anyone else wanting to hear him do a typical "Neo-soul" album....this cat is much too deep to play that card forever. D'Angelo's thing is all about timing and we just have to wait and see what he's gonna do.

This is my dream for a new D'Angelo project: work with Lewis Taylor, Karriem Riggins, and Meshell Ndegeocello. Make it 10 songs long. Lewis for a rock joint, Karriem for a hip-hop joint, Meshell for a funk joint, and D on everything else throughout the rest of the album. Lose the weight and get cut again. Cut the cornrows and get a James Brown style 'fro that's a bit shorter in length and keep it nappy. Rock the full beard, keep it trimmed down but keep the goatee a bit thicker. Get seriously funky on the threads....some full-on rock star shit complete with shades.

YESSSSS !!!! That´s what I´m saying....I saw him on tour back then, and he was on fire.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yo, I never thought it was either but when I was arguing with jokers on this board right after it dropped that's all they were saying. From the horn arrangements to the falsetto singing. Fools on here made all kinds of claims. My only connection of the two was the fact that D did a sexy slow song singing in falsetto and then dropped a video that Prince fans thought SHOULD have been done by Prince first. I hear a little influence but that's about it. It isn't a rip off of any Prince song. Folks were on here talking about they wish Prince would do a version of "Untitled" and "show D'Angelo how its done". lol If he did, Prince would have been doing a COVER TUNE OF SOMETHING D'ANGELO WROTE. Some people need to learn to give credit where credit is due.

D'Angelo or someone around said that "Untitled" was like an audition for Prince. D'Angelo himself definitely sees this as an Prince-inspired track. And Prince did in fact react to it, with "U R My Sunshine". Just listened to this today (the longer Chocolate Invasion version). The bridge before the last chorus is to die for.

U R My Sunshine had about 1/10000th of the impact of "Untitled". I never heard the "audition for Prince" crap before. All I know is he laid it down smooth and Prince fans have been at his throat ever since.

and, then to trump him "SEXUALLY" ?!?
They've had it out "D" ever since.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with "impact". All I meant to say is that, since "U R My Sunshine" came out SOON after "Untitled" AND featured Angie Stone on vocals AND is so obviously similar to "Untitled", Prince reacted to something that everyone saw has a hommage (sp?) to him.

And if I can find the audition "crap", I will post it. I might not remember it quite accurately, but so what.

I distinctly remember it, prior to the release of the album, being talked about as a 'tribute' to Prince and, in fact, I pulled these links from Pop Matters, and Genie Lab.

Written in collaboration with Soul-cousin Rafael Saadiq, "Untitled" was intended as a tribute to "The Artist," in lieu of a rumored straight-up jack of "Adore." With "Untitled" the jack remains intact, though arguably Prince has never sounded better channeled through D'Angelo. It is quite simply the recording's best track

We are not talking about how some Prince fans view the song, but how the writer of it intended it himself.

Exactly.

I always heard that D intended it as a tribute to Prince. It certainly has those elements, but it remains a D'Angelo tune. That's the difference between influence and jacking. Although when you call someone out, all bets are off.

Thanks for clearing that up for me BK. Yeah, I think the only thing in "Untitled" that ostensibly resembles Prince is the tone of D'Angelo's falsetto and maybe the backing vocal arrangement - but Prince does not own the copyright to singing slow jams with falsetto and D'Angelo really can't help how his vocal tone sounds.

"Untitled" may have been influenced by Prince, but's never played out to me as a Prince rip off. That just proves to me that when D'Angelo is hitting on all cylinders, he's tops - great artists are sometimes those who are able to take influence and meld it with their own artistic sensibilities and forge something new.

I agree with my main man Namepeace. I'm also not bothered by Dupri's reported involvement in D'Angelo's career - I don't think Jermaine Dupri is going to tell D'Angelo how to make music. But he did play a large part in resurrecting a few careers that were headed nowhere. He'll simply guide D'Angelo's marketing and promotional campaigns....at least I hope this is the case.

That's because most D'Angelo fans are fans of soul music & R&B. Since Prince is a hybrid artist, there are going to be those who are fans of his more poppy, rockish songs.
