Rare Soul !

I am looking for some rare or little known soul singers in the likes of Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, Pre-Funk James Brown. I just recently got into Gene Chandler and his song Rainbow.
PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever

Repost...

If you've a hankerin' for some real Soul/R&B from some true masters, i've got 2 suggestions.

William Bell

....A Portrait Is Forever (2000)

William Bell was on of the premiere artist/producer/writers for the great STAX/Volt label.
You'll probably recognize him for writing tunes like Born Under A Bad Sign (Albert King), To Be A Lover (Gene Chandler/Billy Idol) I Forgot to Be Your Lover (William Bell) and You Don't Miss Your Water (LaVern Baker/William Bell/Brian Eno/John Lee Hooker/King Curtis/Jerry Lee Lewis/Otis Redding)

Plus, I got a "Special Thanks" on the record...

Howard Tate...

...Rediscovered (2003)

Howard Tate is R&B veteran that was vehicle for R&B writer *Jerry Ragovoy (aka Norman Meade). Howard is probably best known for the tune Get It While You Can ('66). This tune is heart wrenchingly reprised on Rediscovered with just Howard (vocals) and Jerry (on piano). A decent pure R&B cover of Kiss (Prince) is also included.

Jerry told me that while they were doing performances prior to the release of this CD, they did a gig in a Bay area venue. In the audience were quite a few name artists who are big fans of Howard. One of them was Elvis Costello. Some time after this gig, Elvis called Jerry up and stated he had written something for Howard. A collaboration occurred between Elvis and Jerry resulting in Either Side of the Same Town.

*Cry Baby - Garnet Mimms
Piece of My Heart - Erma Franklin/Janis Joplin/
Time Is On My Side - Irma Thomas/The Rolling Stones
Stay With Me - Lorraine Ellison
My Baby - Janis Joplin
Get It While You Can - Howard Tate/Janis Joplin
Cry Baby - Janis Joplin
Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) - Janis Joplin
Stop - Howard Tate/James Gang/Jimi Hendrix

Give these 2 true Soul-Soldiers some love while they're still with us.
