Hendrix Named Greatest Guitarist...Prince NOT In Top 20!?! Where's Prince on this list? Where's the list? Did he even make the top 50? Top 100?? I needs 2 know! Read on:
--- Hendrix Named Greatest Guitarist Tue Aug 6, 9:59 AM ET LONDON (AP) - Psychedelic guitarist Jimi Hendrix has been voted the instrument's greatest player in a poll conducted by Total Guitar magazine. Hendrix, who died in 1970 at the age of 27, beat Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page to the top spot in the poll of the magazine's readers. Hendrix made his name in the late 1960s, with classics like "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe" and "Voodoo Chile." Blues veteran Eric Clapton came in third, followed by Slash from Guns N' Roses and Brian May of Queen. Younger talents also made the top 100, including Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead at 35 and Noel Gallagher from Oasis at 50. Johnny Ramone of The Ramones — who built a long career on rudimentary three-chord rock — was 88th. "What's nice about it is that it's not some music critic's opinion of the best guitarists — these guys might not be `cool' by any music critic's viewpoint, but they genuinely are the fastest, loudest, most exciting players in rock 'n' roll," said the magazine's editor, Scott Rowley. No woman made the top 100. Only one — Tracy Chapman — was among 440 guitarists nominated by the magazine. "Personally I don't know if it's a bad thing," Rowley said. "Women just aren't as geeky or competitive about it as guys. Instead of showing off, they're trying to write a good song. Which is probably smarter." ___ The Top 20: 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Jimmy Page 3. Eric Clapton 4. Slash 5. Brian May 6. Joe Satriani (soloist) 7. Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) 8. Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) 9. Kirk Hammett (Metallica) 10. Steve Vai (soloist) 11. Carlos Santana (Santana) 12. James Hetfield (Metallica) 13. Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) 14. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) 15. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) 16. Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne) 17. Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy, others) 18. Jeff Beck (Cream, Yardbirds, others) 19. Stevie Ray Vaughan (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Double Trouble) 20. Angus Young --- Anyone know where the complete list can b found? |

You mean to tell me that Johnny Ramone and Slash are better than Prince? And Kurt Cobain is there just for being dead the same way his band is seriously overrated. Get real | |

Actually early Van Halen music reminds me of when I was young and full of piss and vinegar, carefree summer days and nights, alot of Ed's guitar playing has made me feel unbelievable! | |

Well, perhaps Total Guitar Magazine feels he doesn't belong there. Prince is not all things to all people. Why not write a letter to the editor & ask them why they failed to include him? | |

All this shows is Prince's increasing lack of musical relevance. | |

Do some of you really take these lists seriously?
Well, I don't think Prince would reasonably speaking have credentials to get on the list, but you know why on earth would I even bother with a list like "20 greatest guitarists". Now, give me "20 arbitrary guitarists" and that would make a much more interesting reading. [This message was edited Wed Aug 7 4:10:15 PDT 2002 by Novabreaker] | |

Tracy Chapman made the list. That's nice.
Out of 440 artists mentioned Nancy Wilson of HEART was not even on the list? Is this not her catagory or something? I'm not saying she's the best, as not being a musician myself I would not presume to judge one over the other, but she should be on the list. I'm firmly planted in denial | |

Prince didn't chart in the 440? He is slept on as a musician because of his bigger-than-the-music image. | |

I'll just say that when it comes 2 these type of lists of top this & that, they never seem 2 get it right nor go about it with serious research or respect 4 such players as Prince or Ernie Isley etc...If they did, the list if they really needed one would not look like this.
Afro Americans do have other fantastic players. Hendrix is the only brotha 2 B in the "minds" of most all, who make up these list. His impact was super huge, but 2 act like there hasn't been any other brothas who can play or are worthy since 1970 is a crime. Isley got his chops from the great Hendrix anyways..thats like learning how 2 fight from Bruce Lee. Hey, they have Santana on the list, so there's so need 2 put his brother on the list who can play some serious guitar himself? But U rather sell me "Kurt Cobain" instead? What about Eddie Hazel, who can play some mindblowin stuff..."Maggotbrain" dig on it, if U don't know about it...What about Wes Montgomery? Its easy 2 keep goin in terms of those who seem 2 get left off~ These lists mean what? Those who make the cut get a door prize... | |
