Teddy Pendergrass appreciation thread

I`ve been listening a lot to Teddy Pendergrass lately, and i LOVE his voice worship
"Somebody told me" is my favorite at the moment...
It looks like every one of his albums is re-released on cd, so i got some shopping to do... biggrin

I was thinking the other day about starting a Teddy P appreciation thread.

Teddy was the man back in the day. He had all the ladies going crazy over him, including my mother. lol

"Come On and Go With Me" is my favorite by him.

Does anyone remember the Teddy Jeans? lol

favorite Teddy Pendergrass songs:

"The Whole Town Is Laughing At Me" (1977)
"Only You" (1978)
"Close The Door" (1978)
"It Don't Hurt Now" (1978)
"When Somebody Loves You Back"
"Come Go With Me" (1979)
"I'll Never See Heaven Again" (1979)
"Do Me" (1979)
"Love T.K.O" (1980)
"Girl You Know" (1980)
"Two Hearts" with Stephanie Mills (1981)
"Love For Two" (1984)
"You're My Choice Tonight" (1985)
"Joy" (1988)
"Love Is The Power" (1988)
"Can We Be Lovers" (1988)

My favorite Teddy Pendergrass albums are 'Life Is A Song Worth Singing' (1978) and 'Teddy' (1979),two of the best R&B albums of the 70s,imo.Producers Gamble and Huff were at the top of their game during this period.

I like the 2-for-1 CDs, especially those old motown albums...
Have you gotten to Jean Carn yet, you`ll LOVE her, i know...

No,I haven't got to Jean Carne yet.But yes, those 2-for-1 remasters are great! You get two albums on one disc for the price of a regular CD.A few of the Ojays CDs even have bonus tracks.

One problem though.Regarding the Ojays, their 2-for-1 series begins with the albums 'Message In The Music' (1976) and 'Traveling At The Speed of Thought'(1977).No problem, since most of the previous albums ('Backstabbers','Ship Ahoy',etc) were already remastered in the 90s.But there is no remaster for the 1975 masterpiece 'Family Reunion',which just happens to be my favorite Ojays album!

Oh well,I guess I can't complain. What they've released so far sounds great and the liner notes are AMAZING....lengthy and in-depth.

They've released a ton of albums, but I'm mostly interested in the albums that were produced by Gamble and Huff. From 1972-1987,they released 14 albums produced by Gamble and Huff.If you're just starting to get into the catalog,I would recommend that you start with these albums...

'Back Stabbers' (1972)
'Ship Ahoy' (1973)
'Family Reunion' (1975)
'So Full Of Love' (1978)

I remember when I was little, my mom played Teddy's music in the house, the car. I grew up hearing him. I liked his voice. My mom had the Harold Melvin album with Teddy on lead blowing "If You Don't Know Me By Now". Then she got Teddy's solo album with "I Don't Love You Anymore". I was real little, but I remember digging that song. Other's that I remember hearing mom playing was

When Somebody Loves You Back
Close The Door
Turn Off The Lights
Come Go With Me
Feel The Fire
Love T.K.O.

I remember buying my mom Teddy's "Live Coast to Coast" album for Christmas. That album, like Marvin's Live album is something to hear. I also bought her for her birthday the "TP" album.

DavidEye is exactly right. Gamble and Huff were no joke and they two of the greatest music producers to ever live.

I'm sure you know others, but you just don't realize it. I mean, is it really possible to not know "For the Love of Money"? At any rate, you need to get shopping.

I love Teddy P, but I have to admit I prefer his work with the Blue Notes. Here's my 2-disc Philly Soul playlist:

1. T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia) - MFSB
2. Love Train - The O'Jays
3. I'll Be Around - The Spinners
4. Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love) - The Delfonics
5. Hey There Lonely Girl - Eddie Holman
6. Hope That We Can Be Together Soon - Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
7. Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart) - The Stylistics
8. Me and Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul
9. Use ta Be My Girl - The O'Jays
10. I Miss You - Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
11. Sadie - The Spinners
12. La-La Means I Love You - The Delfonics
13. Love T.K.O. - Teddy Pendergrass
14. Give the People What They Want - The O'Jays
15. People Make the World Go Round - The Stylistics
16. Stairway to Heaven
17. Show You the Way to Go - The Jacksons
18. The Rubberband Man - The Spinners
19. Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet Tender Love) - The O'Jays
20. Close the Door - Teddy Pendergrass

1. Message in Our Music - The O'Jays
2. Could It Be I'm Falling in Love - The Spinners
3. You Are Everything - The Stylistics
4. Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) - The Delfonics
5. Betcha By Golly, Wow - The Stylistics
6. Back Stabbers - The O'Jays
7. The Love I Lost - Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
8. 992 Arguments - The O'Jays
9. They Just Can't Stop It (The Games People Play) - The Spinners
10. For the Love of Money - The O'Jays
11. Turn Off the Lights - Teddy Pendergrass
12. If You Don't Know Me By Now - Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
13. You Make Me Feel Brand New - The Stylistics
14. Come Go With Me - Teddy Pendergrass
15. Enjoy Yourself - The Jacksons
16. I Love Music - The O'Jays
17. Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - McFadden & Whitehead

It's heavy on the hits and the O'Jays, which was my intent. I need to get around to doing some more volumes, because there are still a lot of great songs missing!

Thanks. Yeah, I've heard that album. "Love T.K.O." was released as the single back then. I don't have it, but I remember thinking Regina did a good job.
