TEDDY? "It's Time"

U Jam.

There R a few ORGers here that recently said New Jack Swing was the worst era of R&B... BlaqueKnight, being one of them.

This would mean that they think current R&B is better than the great late '80s, early '90s Teddy Riley stuff. I brought up one of my fav cuts, that is RARELY mentioned... "It's Time" by The Winans.

Teddy's drum programming on that cut was like DC go-go on steroids. I mean Teddy could swing. I worked day and night 2 make my rythym tracks swing and hit that hard.

I'd say between the dance steps and the rythym tracks, that New Jack Swing was one of the most refreshing periods of urban R&B.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

With that said.....

Are they out of their damn minds?

Teddy Riley/Guy/Blackstreet were the last of the greatest digital funk bands. They're the reason why I love the Roland D-50 synth!

And let not forget the best album Teddy ever produced:

Good song, but my song off that album is "a friend". Gorgeous song. Also, "everyday the same" (featuring stevie wonder) is my second fav.

YEAH, NEW JACK SWING WAS SHIT...

For me, it's the last period of R'n'B that had a groove AND melody. There are so many under-rated tracks from that era...off the top of my head, here are a few:

Troop "Spread My Wings"
Bobby Brown "Get Away"
Guy "Wanna Get With U"
Wrecks'n'Effect "New Jack Swing"
Christopher Williams "Every Little Thing You Do"
James Ingram "It's Real"
Keisha Jackson "Mama Told Me"

I could go on and on...even the lesser ones like G-Wiz's "Teddy Bear" still had something...the list would be endless...and if you asked me to compile a list of current top notch R'n'B tunes, the list would be damn short.

And "It's Time" is great!

Shame Jacko didn't decide to make the whole album teddy riley produced as that woulda been even better. Apparantly, that was the original idea. I read an article about it and teddy said that was the plan i think? So there is more teddy/jacko era dangerous mad And i think la reid and babyface did some trax with jacko also (which probably woulda been newjack lite, but still cool regardless)

Hey, I love Dangerous. Still, Guy is the best album TR ever produced. The Future is also excellent, but thte first album is better.

The Teddy outtakes turned up on Blood on the Dance Floor and The Ultimate Collection. Besides, the non-Teddy songs were great as well.

I don't know anything about LaFace working with MJ, but he did an excellent job with a Babyface song named "On the Line."

Nah, there must be more teddy/jacko tracks but ur right, "blood on....." did turn up later on, as did "ghosts" and a few others, but theres more. Jacko worked on close to 100 songs on this project apparantly. 14 made it of course, whilst about another 5 appeared later on. A few bryan loren produced tracks musta been made too. As i heard a few boot clips and they sounded like bryan's work and they made "superfly sister" around tha time and of all things "do the bartman"

I think la and babyface worked with Jacko in 1991 or around that time as Jermaine was allegedly pissed off at mike for stealing them when jermaine wanted to use them (which he did, and he even signed to Laface records and released the album "you said").

The New Jack era certainly was NOT one of the greatest in R&B, but far superior to the shit that's being produced now.

It's Time was a good song, but don't forget songs like "Fantasy", "I Like", "Is It Good to You?(Heavy D.)", "I Want Her(Keith Sweat)" or Bobby Brown's "Til The End of Time"...It was good toe tappin' music for a young man in his late teens as I was then when it first came out.

It wasn't just the booming snare that made NJS but Teddy also had some pretty unique keyboard solos going on in the music as well....least we forget....can't say the same for the shit that's being produced today....just choppy beats with some annoying sampled sound looped over and over again...drives me crazy

I remember when Dangerous came out, and although I was a huge fan of Teddy Riley, I liked his cuts the least on the album although they seemed to be the biggest hits....my favorite song just happened to be "Who is it" and that sounded pretty black to me without Teddy's help.

I'm no big Michael fan either, but he has some of the wickedest ballads in the history of music....no one in their right minds could ever deny that...which is why this particular song happened to be my favorite from the album..
