The Spinners Thread

Out of all of the 70's vocal male groups their were, these guys were my absolute favorite. I used to like them because you would always get surprises listening to them. You may hear 3 SOMETIMES 4 lead singers in one song. Sometimes Philppe Wynn, Bobby Smith and Henry would switch lead vocals and you couldn't tell who from who(Ex: Ghetto Child from their 1973 classic Atlantic Records album SPINNERS). Man that album is a bona fide soul music classic. 5 songs off that album were hit songs. And these guys like the Temptations could put on a show. Growing up as a child, every tinme The Spinners had songs with great lyrics that really touch the inner depths of your soul. This is no doubt due to the great writing of Linda Creed and Thom Bell. How can you not be touched by "Sadie" from the NEW AND IMPROVED album. MIGHTY LOVE was a Philly soul classic album too. The title track of that song was really like a gospel song in terms of structure and especially that amazing climax, with Phillpe Wynn testifying, shouting and singing on the mike like a preacher in the pulpit. It's songs like this that made them special. The Spinners are evidence of what happens when you put some good singers, with a good producer(Thom Bell) and some good material.

It was said that their song "The Rubberband Man" was a tribute to Bootsy Collins. At any rate, Phillpe Wynn did hook up with George Clinton and got funked up. They made some of the best music of the 70's.

Excuse me, on my post...where it reads growing up as a child, I meant to say that growing up as a child, whenever I would be watching a performance from them(The Spinners) on the tv, I'd be in front of the tv trying to learn their dance steps. My apologies.

Dude. I was in a club Sat nite and the band was takin' a break and they busted "Ain't No Price on Happiness" and "Mighty Love" over the PA and I'm sangin' my ass off. Told her MIGHTY LOVE was a great album.

BTW: Got a slow dance when the band was jammin' "Purple Rain". She was on my case, cuz I paused to check out the guitarist. "I hate it when you get lost in the music like that". I smiled and said "That's what a funkadelic will do."

the spinners rock. I have never seen any live footage but the performance on "when we were kings". no need to discuss the records, but that clip convinced me of the live qualities of the spinners... great band, really.
"Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany" peace

I love many of The Spinners songs, but my favorite would have to be the 1975 hit "Games People Play".
