Video really did kill music I know its a cliche, "video killed the radio star" but it is so true. When videos first really started catching on, its was more for the creative aspect, i mean the Art of Duran Duran, or Videos like Thriller and Take on Me, but as time went on like anything that gets commercialized, video is causing the demise of music. I was recently looking through some old Queen interviews and it was right around 1983 when they did "Radio Ga Ga", and they spoke about how the Eyes and the ears arent always a good match, and how Video was causing the death of Radio and Music, talk about being visionaries, i think Queen saw this happening even before Videos were huge. Lets think of how much it has changed for a moment, MTV on average plays 4 hours of Videos a day, and one of those Hours is a countdown of where they show videos that they show during the other 3 hours, the other 20 hours is spent on everything from Road Rules to Next to Sweet 16 to Some other reality show with some blonde. This compared to early MTV when the whole day was spent on Videos. I think all of this can also be why we have a much younger artist out there today in the mainstream world, nowadays if you are over 21 you are old news. Now if U look over in the Latin market, the Video channels there mainly HTV plays 24 hours non stop videos, and if u like at the Latin Market, though Reggaeton is big, older artists (30+) continue to be at the forefront, mainly because there is more of Loyality amongst fans.
I recently thought wouldnt it be great if MTV/VH1/BET stopped playing videos and something new came along that had no reality shows, no dating shows, no Bling/pimp shows, and just played Videos straight, no Vj's, nothing but videos, and not just new videos, classic ones thrown in too, well we can hope for that day..... "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

There are channels that play videos straight like VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul. FUSE is still predominantly videos too. I also like watching mun2 for videos. channel edit [Edited 7/6/06 14:25pm]

Video has been a powerful medium and has really enhanced a lot of music as well. It works both ways. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
