"Tempted" by Squeeze (1981)

music "Tempted" music
(written by Difford/Tilbrook)

I bought a toothbrush,some toothpaste,a flannel for my face
pajamas,a hairbrush,new shoes and a case
I said to my reflection, let's get out of this place
Passed the church and the steeple, the laundry on the hill
billboards and the buildings
memories of it still keep calling and calling
but forget it all,I know I will

(chorus)
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
what's been going on now that you have gone
There's no other, tempted by the fruit of another
tempted but the truth is discovered

I'm at the carpark,the airport,the baggage carousel
the people keep on grabbing and wishing I was well
I said "It's no occasion,it's no story I can tell"
At my bedside, empty pocket,a foot without a sock
your body gets much closer
I fumble for the clock, alarmed by the seduction
I wish that it would stop

(chorus)
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
what's been going on,now that you have gone
there's no other, tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered

I bought a novell,some perfume,a fortune all for you
but it's not my conscience that hates to be untrue
I asked of my reflection
tell me,what is there to do?

repeat chorus

on a lighter note ... did u guys catch the VH1 special ... i think it was .... a VH1 special ... with the lead singer from Squeeze where he was performing in the US ... just basically him .... on guitar .... i grew up when Squeeze were really HOT in college .... so ..... i was interested .... its crap like this on VH1 --- that really isnt in any TV guides anymore - hell, i dont even think it said anything on my COMCAST dig cable guide .... but i was flippin channels one night .... and it was on .....

it was cool ... he has such a unique and "normal " voice (hard to describe ) ... but he was funny , talented ... and it was a hoot seeing him just on the streets of cities belting out tunes .... most people of course didnt know who he was ... but that was what was funny bout it ... confused cool

I think you're referring to Paul Carrack? He's the one singing lead on "Tempted".He had several solo hits too,and he can be heard singing lead on the 1975 Ace hit "How Long".

i think you're referring to the "Bands Re-united" program. He tours around alot, playing solo gigs. It's a shame that Jools Holland wouldn't sign on to do the reunion. They were a great band, and Difford/Tillbrook were at one time, compared to lennon/mccartney

I think that was actually Glenn Tillbrook you saw on VH1 - he had a solo tour goin' on a while back. An excellent songwriter AND guitar player.

wow , now u got me confused ... dont know who it was ... i THINK it was Paul because he sang this song .... and "pulling muscles from a shell" on the street .... i DO NOT think it was the reunion thingy ... cus the "special" was just focused on HIM ... this singer ... and his "triumphant " return to america .... he kinda played small clubs ... and like i said ... the coolest thing was that he embraced his music and just kinda went out on the streets with a guitar .... and people sang with him ...

there is something about SQUEEZE ... now i think i will have to get a couple albums by them again .... reminds me of the college dazeeeee ..... cool

no--- .... he had more of a boyish look ...in the group photo - which one was Paul ??? i actually looked at that ... and i thought it was the guy on the right .... but it has been months since i saw that show i think ... and my alzheimers is obviously acting up ..... confused ... cus if that is the guy who sang "tempted" ... i am thinkin it was not him ... and maybe on that show ... the guy did not sing "tempted " but i really do remember "pulling muscles" and .... oh damn on the "singles cd" .... the one right after pulling muscles or before it !!! lol
(another nail for my heart)

i just had to look it up !!!! it was glenn tilbrook .... that was who the "special followed" ..... it was one of those 60min shows ... that i said afterwards "that was good .... how many of similar good shows do i miss " (since i did not see a listing anywhere that it was ON !!!!!) ...

On the album cover posted above,I'm pretty sure that Paul is the guy on the right. In the "Tempted" video, though, his hair is lighter.

I only have their 1981 album 'East Side Story' (featuring "Tempted") and a Greatest Hits CD by them. Are there any other Squeeze albums that you would recommend? Do they have any other cool,blues-flavored tracks like "Tempted"?

Actually, you are correct. Glenn Tilbrook was the primary lead singer for Squeeze, though Paul Carrack sang a few lead vocals early on in the band's career, and someone else sang lead on their first hit, "Cool For Cats," though I do not remember his name.
