"MAGGOT BRAIN" or "ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE"

Which do you think is the superior FUNKADELIC album. I've read many reviews that hailed "One Nation" as the DEFINITIVE Funkadelic masterpiece and others that has hailed "MAGGOT BRAIN" as one of the top guitar albums of all times. Which is the better in your opinion and why.
My vote goes to MAGGOT BRAIN.

I think ONE NATION is a good album but its not as "loose", "free" and "experimental" as MAGGOT BRAIN IMO.

"Maggot Brain" has such a "garage band" sound to it. "One Nation" is more polished. I think MAGGOT BRAIN has stronger and more memorable songs (the title track, "Me and My Folks", "Hit It and Quit It","Super Stupid", "Wars Of Armaggeddon") while ONE NATION has its share of memorable cuts(the title track, "Who Says A Rock Band", "Lunchmeatophobia", "Maggot Brain"), I think ONE NATION has a bigger share of clunkers ("Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad"-both versions, "Grooveallegiance") and middle of the road stuff ("Into You", "Cholly").

My vote is for MAGGOT BRAIN

It is a tough call for sure, but I was into them when One Nation was brand new whereas I discovered Maggot Brain long after the fact. Therefore, One Nation holds a special place for me and the title track is one of my all-time favorite jams. If only the extended version of One Nation was on the album! Then it would be much more clear cut for me. I also like the version of Maggot Brain on One Nation better than the original. You called Cholly middle of the road ... that is another one of my all-time favorite Funkadelic jams. Although One Nation was more polished than Maggot Brain, it was more radical for its time than Maggot Brain was in the sense that by 1978 there was very little rock in the vein of Think It Ain't Illegal Yet, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock and Maggot Brain (live). In a close call, One Nation gets the call!

Peace,
Scott

I adore everything on 'One Nation...', but it probably doesn't flow as well as 'Maggot Brain'. The instrumentals on One Nation are great, but I feel they take something away from it all. Saying that, though, 'Cholly' and 'Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad' are two of my all-time favourite Funkadelic songs.

Everything on Maggot Brain is pretty steller, though I find 'Back In Our Minds' a chore to get through sometimes, and the fact it was on there pisses me off a bit (it just kind of kills the whole vibe).

Overall, I'd say 'One Nation...' is (technically) superior with the band at its peak, but 'Maggot Brain' has that raw energy and flow to it that 'One Nation...' perhaps lacks. Just depends which style you like.

It's amazing how different the same band sounds on both these albums.

LOL...I was "JUST" playing "Back In Our Minds" and you can tell that they were on "something" when they flub that line in the song..LOL!

I think I like them both for different reasons, Maggot Brain is definitely grittier and more raw and is probably better as a "guitar" album, but One Nation is more danceable, more funky and more varied. Can you Get to that is probably my favorite funkadelic song ever though

Well, when you think about, it really is two completely different bands. On Maggot Brain you have Tiki Fulwood, Billy "Bass" Nelson, Tawl Ross, Eddie Hazel and Bernie Worrell and then George Clinton, Ray Davis, Grady Thomas, Calvin Simon and Fuzzy Haskins, just a five piece band and a five piece vocal group. By the time of One Nation, most of the original lineup was gone and there were several alternates on every instrument, the liner notes alone list: Gary Shider, Michael Hampton, Bernie Worrell, Junie Morrison, Tyrone Lampkin, Jerome Brailey, Larry Frantangelo, Bootsy Collins, Boogie Mosson, Skeet Curtis, George Clinton, Ray Davis, Lynn Mabry, Ron Ford, Dawn Silva, Debbie wright, Jeanette Washington, mallia Franklin, Greg Thomas

I've only heard Maggot Brain, but that album is tight. The title track is probably in the list of the ten songs of all time that made the biggest impact on first listen.
