I wonder how many of you guys who claim to be 'fans' or used to be 'fans' could write an entire album/artist off just because you don't like the first single.

M*****a fans still bought "American Life" and "Ray of Light."

I agree with some of the rest of you. I like the song-- it's carefree, fun vibe--but I'm wondering about it being the first single. For me, it's just not as strong as I expected. I was expecting more of a dance track since J.D. and the buzz mentioned that Janet was going back to her dance roots.

Do any of you know how first singles are chosen? Exactly what would be the marketing strategy by choosing Call on Me as the first single for this well-publicized "dance-oriented" cd? My biggest complaint is that it's not a dance track. I read that J.D. or someone mentioned that it was gonna be mid-tempo, but it's possible to have a mid-tempo dance track. I'm sure it will do quite well, but I was just curious as to the strategy of releasing/choosing first singles in general?

it all depends on what's out in the market? if an uptempo track would just get lost amongst all of the other uptempo tracks on radio, it could make more sense to release something that fulfills a missing sound. that said, if the uptempo track is slammin' it could just show everybody how its really done!

more than likely, though, its because they planned on releasing two singles BEFORE the cd comes out. by the time september rolls around, a hot dance track will be released and all will be right in the universe. lol

Woooo hooooo!!!!! Thank you because I really want a dance track!lol Yeah, I guess it all depends upon what's out there right now. It IS probably too early to show all of her cards, so to speak!! wink
Thanks for explaining.

Seems to be a pattern of sorts with JJ to do this.

That's The Way Love Goes/If

Got Til It's Gone/Together Again

didn't do it with All 4 U

I Want You/All Nite

This and whatever may follow

Problem is The material on janet. and Velvet Rope are light years ahead of anything she's done since. I'm a little disheartened that she's been trying to play it safe since Velvet Rope didn't do as well commerically as her pervious albums. And I'm sure dimise of Damita Jo won't help her want to try something different. For some reason I get the sense she is more worried about the numbers than doing something that is artisticlly daring for her.

It'll probably do well on radio... will I get the new janet maybe out of a feeling of nostalgia, sp, will I think it will come anywhere near her past success no.

I Want You wasn't the first single off Damita Jo. Also, didn't do it with her first four albums.

It has been the pattern since she signed to Virgin.

Also i thought Just A Little While was only released because it had leaked on the radio. i remember the video for I Want U being played more and also that was the song she did at promotions for the album.

i'm still going to but it. i bought Damita Jo even though i was highly disappointed by what i had heard off of the album.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but since I find the first single lackluster, I now have really really high hopes for the second track. All I can think of is the first time I heard the song Control or If. I want to be at attention like that. I want to believe she's setting us up for an ass kicking. A cute midtempo appetizer to be followed by an undeniable-booty-shaking-neck-snapping-entree. That's what I want to believe and until then I'll sip my sparkling water and wait.

It means how many people heard the song, and that counts towards billboard, weird huh! I hear a lot of songs on the radio I don't like, yet it still counts towards the songs success, even more reason to change a station if a song u don't like comes on! I guess it works like TV ratings.

Labels don't usually release singles to iTunes as soon as they go to radio.

Christina Aguliera was the exception.
