Perhaps my aversion to the 90s was just that I completely didn't identify with the zeitgeist of the time and being a teenager without a computer, didn't explore things beyond the mainstream. I love the 00s way more than the 90s, but probably because I dig a lot deeper than I did back then. Much of the music I love from this decade doesn't get much media exposure.

i think discovering music without the help of a computer HELPED me appreciate music more, really. before having forums like this or rate your music or whatever, i kinda had to rely on my own imagination and other people's face-to-face opinions on music, and there was a lot less cacophany involved in taking in new music. i'd have to hunt down reviews of new albums in magazines, etc. i think there are plusses of listening to music and discovering new stuff post-internet, don't get me wrong, but i also really enjoyed the risk of getting a new album and not knowing what it would be like because it leaked online or someone reviewed an advance copy, etc. - ya know?

Amen to that! I used to go to the local record store almost weekly to check out the new release sheet.

I was always a happy person at heart, and I was turned off by the anger/mopiness of the decade. Completely!

That was only a fraction of what was going on.

And aside from how you felt then, what's the problem now Mr. Lou Reed?

lol I can't explain it rationally. Maybe it was the grunge. Maybe it was the hopelessness. Maybe I just needed to age before I could appreciate that kind of music. Maybe I just think it sucks. lol

the 90s kick this decade's ass so far for music. is that my age talking or has music, by and large, been really lackluster so far this decade?

The latter, cuz I feel the same way. And we haven't mellowed that much.

I dunno - in the past two or three years I've found myself getting engaged with and excited by new music in a way that I haven't been since '95 or so. However I think that has a lot more to do with the fact that I feel a little more open to actively seeking out left-field music than any change in quality of music.

I understand that too, but I wasn't nearly the fan of music in general back then as I was now, so I've utilized all resources more during this decade.

that makes sense. it took me a long time to make sense of the seventies...for a while i thought it was all dirty and depressing. and a lot of it was. but as a part of the past that informs the present, over the years i've come to appreciate and enjoy it for what it was.

I was a teenager when alternative hit, and I actually felt more hopeless before all of that. Once I saw all these freaks like Kurt Cobain and Bjork and Tricky running around, I realized it was not only okay to be a freak, but preferable. Why do you think The Cure was my favorite band by age 11? lol

to be honest, i never really bought into grunge as a whole - i really just liked curt and courtney, and all the rest of it sounded like washed out metal to me. but i DID like that all the freakazoid music i was digging on in the late '80s was becoming the mainstream preference...it was like the world was catching up with my life, for lack of a better way of saying it. when i saw cramps videos on prime time mtv programming, i knew life was good. lol

eek Thank gods. I like a few of KoRn's songs and always thought it would be dangerously uncool to express a liking for them here.

That album is the epitome of teen angst. This is before Korn became a nu metal band for jock types. This album is completely next level, I’ve never heard anything like it or since. Well maybe some of the songs from Tools Opiate album come close, but that was just an Ep. The album didn’t make the final cut because Life of Agony’s River Runs Red is on that vibe. Basically these songs are 90’s versions of Suicidal Tendencies Institutionalized or Black Flags Family Man to me, not that that's were my head was at all the time, but I liked the energy.

lol
not quite. but Venom was one of my first concerts, and I'm going to see Slayer next month.

Oof - I just realized I forgot to buy that bloody Prong album you recommended today! crap. I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow, then. I've been listening Rude Awakening quite a bit in the past week or so, and it's really grown on me, especially the title track.

That album had majorly fallen off for me, but I've recently re-connected with it in a big way. It might even be my favorite Prince album of the 90's.

Sexy MF
Love 2 the 9's
The Morning Papers
Sweet Baby
Continental
Damn U
7
And God Created Woman

You can't fuck with those songs.
