lol That was my response after wtaching that video. I'd heard of them, but never actually heard them until I clicked on this thread. Unless they have better to offer than that, I don't think I was missing anything.

I remember Process & the Doo Rags very well, and my impression back then was they were Rick James' response to The Time. Now I'll admit that the Mary Jane Girls were a very competent response to Vanity 6, but I'm generally skeptical of 'response acts'. And at a certain point in Rick James career it seemed like that's a lot of what he was doing. Responding to Prince...

Yeah, Rick was obsessed with P. So much so that on his album "Wonderful" he donned a Prince-like outfit, basically saying "Fuck it, if I can't beat him - BE him" eek lol

I'm still trying to figure out why he had these cats rock the Process hairdo in 85? He could of copied the Time blueprint and probably out sold them easily without that hair gimmick. He already showed that he could one-up Prince with his Mary Jane Girls creation, if he was in his right mind I think he coulda done it again.

Because THAT was their gimmick - The process. And remember, Morris rocked a doo rag in Purple Rain so I'm pretty sure that's where he got the idea from.

I dunno 4 shure .
If you listen to that intro they sing "Shoop, shoop, shoop, shoop ..." which is a doowop chant .
I always thought that was their intention to express their image : an 80's doowop-funk outfit shrug

And that too as well. I meant to type that in with the "gimmick" comment.

NO!!!!! Process & The Doo-Rags were MORE a tribute to the street-corner harmonies of WAAAAAY BACK (think of the Temptations, Dells, and Delfonics etc.). People see the Suits and Stacy Adams & start "puttin' labels"
on s**t like Paul Mooney said MOST white folks do black folks!!!!! Mary Jane Girls vs. Vanity 6??? YEAH-I could see THAT ONE. Rick dressin' like P on the "Wonderful" LP??? THAT'S OBVIOUS!!!!! But Process & The Doo Rags wasn't singin' about doin' "The Walk".....that's some DOO-WOP!!!!! Stop it, y'all!!!!!

Yeah, but if you just admitted that Rick copied Vanity 6 with MJJ and then he dressed like Prince on the Wonderful album, how CAN'T you see that Process and Doo Rags was a DIRECT response to The Time? eek lol Think about it: Prince had an all girls group...Rick responds with his...Prince has a group of "Cool" style....Rick responds with his, only Rick tweeked it a bit but it's the same group minus the instruments.

I no that was they're gimmick and that's what puzzles me about it, Rick didn't need it to sell those guys all he needed were tighter songs. At that point in 85 RJ was still on his hot streak musically, I'm sure with the Stone City Band backing them they coulda came up with some tight shit without that stupid hair "GIMMICK" as I said in my first post.

If you look at the end of that clip you see Process , the lead-singer , wearing a bandana around his head and wearing some kinda leather-jacket .
I thought that was a great gimmick which they could wear out .
Even on the 12" the printed a cool symbol of that .

Btw , an outstanding track on the first Process & The Doo Rags-album is Searching For Love

Now , with the second album out , they changed a lil' bit to shiny and different colores suits ,

although the front-cover still was a sorta deja-vu , besides the fact that doowop-groups sang on streetcorners .

As for the Mary Jane Girls - Vanity 6 comparison .
Before The Vanity 6-era , The Mary Jane Girls already were listed in the liner-notes of Rick his early albums and performing in his shows as background-voxes . Prince was a supporting-act during that era of Rick's 1980-Tour , so my question would be "Who influenced who ?"
I guess it came from both sides .
The obvious is still at hand but ( correct me if i'm wrong ) according to a Prince-biograpgy , Denise Matthews was a involved with Rick before she joined Prince .

Greatest quote i've read from a close source was that when Rick was lying in the hospital , he got a call in his room from Prince asking how he was doing . Witnesses in the room saw Rick's face lighten up .

.
