With Louis Armstrong:

Cheek to Cheek
Love is Here to Stay
Autumn in New York
Dream a Little Dream of Me

Ella is exquisite.....a clear, strong, (com)passionate performer.

She had a wonderful voice, almost playful and childlike at times.
Her christmas album, "Ella wishes you a swingin` christmas" is perhaps one of the best holiday albums EVER... music

Someday, i`ll have to get the expensive box set "The complete Ella Fitzgerald song books" drool
but for now, i`ll just have to settle with the 2-disc compilation "Gold"

Don`t you just love the cover?

You guys are so right about her voice.

She's one of the best female vocalists ever I imagine.

Her voice is like clear spring water.

Do you recommend that album? I'm interested in a proper retrospective/GH collection...

As far as comps go, here's the one i'd suggest...

...The Concert Years (4 CDs of live performances)

Although there is none of the Armstrong pairings, you get a bit of damn near everything else.
Cuts with the Ellington and Basie bands, smaller groups featuring Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass and everything in between.
One of the major highlights being C Jam Blues where she trades solos with players like Roy Eldridge, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Stan Getz.

In a live setting you get the clear understanding that Ella Fitzgerald is more than a singer...she's a musician.

Speaking of Ella Fitzgerald for those of you in the Palm Beach, Florida vicinity.

My partner in crime, Longineu Parsons, is performing again in...

...Ella: Off the Record at Florida Stage (June 23 to September 3)http://www.floridastage.org/

The year is 1966 and Ella Fitzgerald invites a combo of her favorite musicians to jam with her at a Los Angeles studio. As the session unfolds, we meet the singer as we've always wanted to know her. Swept along by a cascade of her best loved music, we experience Ella's emotional highs and lows as she breaks through to a celebration of living. Don’t miss vocal powerhouse Tina Fabrique singing Ella Fitzgerald's most famous hits including: "How High the Moon", "Our Love is Here to Stay", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "That Old Black Magic", "Cheek To Cheek", "Blue Skies", and many more.

I'm big into Ella, and have to suggest to anyone exploring the Ella-verse (OK, that was cheesy) to find her scatting on a song called "Cotton Tail." It's out there on many many compilations. It's the perfect example of how Ella was more musician than just a good voice. The girl could blow, whether with a big band or just piano or guitar behind her. She was what "jazz" is all about.
