I'm still trying to figure out why he had these cats rock the Process hairdo in 85? He could of copied the Time blueprint and probably out sold them easily without that hair gimmick. He already showed that he could one-up Prince with his Mary Jane Girls creation, if he was in his right mind I think he coulda done it again.

Think about it: Prince had an all girls group...Rick responds with his...Prince has a group of "Cool" style....Rick responds with his, only Rick tweeked it a bit but it's the same group minus the instruments.

I thought that was a great gimmick which they could wear out .

Btw , an outstanding track on the first Process & The Doo Rags-album is Searching For Love






Now , with the second album out , they changed a lil' bit to shiny and different colores suits ,







although the front-cover still was a sorta deja-vu , besides the fact that doowop-groups sang on streetcorners .









As for the Mary Jane Girls - Vanity 6 comparison .
Before The Vanity 6-era , The Mary Jane Girls already were listed in the liner-notes of Rick his early albums and performing in his shows as background-voxes . Prince was a supporting-act during that era of Rick's 1980-Tour , so my question would be "Who influenced who ?"
I guess it came from both sides .
The obvious is still at hand but ( correct me if i'm wrong ) according to a Prince-biograpgy , Denise Matthews was a involved with Rick before she joined Prince .

Greatest quote i've read from a close source was that when Rick was lying in the hospital , he got a call in his room from Prince asking how he was doing . Witnesses in the room saw Rick's face lighten up .
