Why can there never be a thread with a picture of Janet (or any popular female, really) that doesn't disintegrate into an opportunity to pick apart her face or body?

As I said before, the state and shape of her booty are the reflexion of the state of the nexus of the cosmos of reality dimensal balance! stoned

When you use your body as a marketing tool, those things will happen.

I hope Janet didn't type that. It's in text speak. Is she 12? And that picture is a LaToya rip off from one of her old playboy shoots lol

Still quite looking forward to the new single anyway.

When I first saw the pic I sorta thought the same thing I think with many MJ pics--it could be 2006 or it could be 1996--which is not necessarily a bad thing depending on how you look at it. Aside from the moustache, it's the same ole Janet with the pushed up boobs. Maybe we'll ultimately get something very different from her image-wise but I really need something different from her musically for me to make a purchase.

dear janet,

i've been a fan of yours since control. i practically cried when i couldn't get tickets to the rhythm nation tour and i did cry when i got to see the velvet rope show. i've enjoyed every record you've released...yes, janet, even those two. i think damita jo is one of your best, f everyone else!

with all that said, and in all due respect, i need you to put some clothes on. its not cute anymore...its kinda sad. i feel like you think you have nothing else to offer outside of tits and ass. i don't know what the new song/record sounds like but i'm sure i'll love it. you're my favorite female pop star. i don't want you to change; you don't have to recreate yourself with each record. you've done this, though, and we all know you are sexy as hell. you know what else is sexy? a woman who knows she doesn't have to rely on her "assets" to make an entrance (so to speak).

at 40 years old if all you have to offer is skin shots and fun songs, something went wrong somewhere. there's a lot shit going on in the world, j, and very little of it has to do with sex. tons of material is waiting for your interest. you must have something to say about the world we live in, about the world that has only become harder since rhythm nation 1814. please don't prove me wrong.

Well considering she's been working the sex appeal angle for many MANY years now it's kind of her last chance @ that one right? lol I mean she's only got a few years left to work that angle smile & lets face it Janet doesn't have much of a voice, why do you expect her to evolve into something more NOW confused What makes you think she's deep enough to change the formula that's worked for her since Love Will Never Do Without You? She must like being something to look @ (and she still looks good) shrug

That's like asking why Madonna is still showing her snatch every chance she gets lol They're used to a certain kind of attention & they're gonna ride it out until somebody throws a fucking tomato boo nod

lol

but janet (both women, actually) has already shown she can get deeper. rhythm nation, most of velvet rope...there was substance there. what's even more of a feat is that there was substance AND it was still fun. that is a very hard thing to pull off (madonna failed miserably with american life).

hey, if janet wants to look sexy on cd, single, magazine covers, and videos i say go for it. she's still sexy and she should be proud of her appearance. i just don't think it should be the only facet of her work.

But it SEEMS like (as far as her image) she had so much fun once she slimmed down & did the video for Love Will Never Do that she's been riding the sexual thing ever since. Didn't she only do ONE video (for Got Till It's Gone) where she didn't rely on her sexy image? hmmm And didn't many of her "fans" fucking HATE that video?? falloff

I mean she's got a new album coming out. I expect her to do what she's been doing - take provocative photos, look great, arch that back & sell some wrekkids! lol She's always luring folks in w/ that despite whatever "substance" may be found on the album, no? smile Hell she talked about sex more w/ the Velvet Rope project than any other it seems to me lol I dunno, I just don't see this particular pic as a big deal. It's another shot in the array of "ooh, look @ me!" Janet pics shrug It's not like she's pregnant w/ her tits out promoting "project privacy" lol

Wow, high expectations for Janet when you thought Confessions on a Dancefloor was brilliant. It's okay for Madonna to act sexy, wear hot pants and flesh-baring tops and stick a mic down her crotch during live performances, and all the while making dumb, fun, completely disposable pop music, but if Janet releases a sexy pic, it's the end of the world. Y'all act like she should be preaching to the world about social ills, injustice and harsher punishments for parole violators. hammer Judge Janet, on at 5. I just don't get the people on this forum. lol

You had to bring Madonna into this, didn't you? lol

The difference is, Madonna's tried many different things since giving up the sexually provocative angle in '94, image-wise and musically.

It's just recently that she's started to tart it up again.

No, Madonna has *never* abandoned her sexuality. It has always been a part of her image, that and chutzpah.

It's a double standard. Janet coming off a commercial disappointment and people expect a social doctrine? She's a pop star in 2006 - she must work within that context. You want to sell records, you do not talk about issues. Yeah, she could make a record about the FCC and Bush and Iraq - no one would buy that shit. Please.

I don't think she ever abandoned it, but from about '95-'04 she definitely toned down the raunch.

The cool thing about "Rhythm Nation" is that it got props for being her political statement, but it only really had 5 serious songs. She was still able to throw in some great pop tracks and melancholy ballads. And even though "Janet" was supposed to be her big sexual coming out party, it only had a few overtly sexual songs. She still was able to mix something like "New Agenda" with "Throb".

As much as people slag off "All For You" as being vapid and shallow, there were some really sad songs on there. "Truth" and especially "Better Days" are about the most honest I've ever heard her. I didn't feel anything like that coming from "Damita Jo". And it seems like she's more and more afraid with every project to go there.

It'd be nice if she was able to strike that kind of balance again. I think she could tactfully tackle some "issue" songs without it weighing down an entire project or coming across as reactionary. And I think she could put her sexuality out there without it coming off as crass or lifeless a la "Moist", "Warmth" or "Would You Mind?". She got it right with "That's The Way Love Goes" and "Anytime, Anyplace" and hasn't been as sexy on record since.

Normally, the constant Janet/Madonna crossover is unnecessary, but Madonna was brought up in this thread for a very valid reason. Janet was criticized by somebody(bodies) for doing the same thing that Madonna does without critique. I've been bored with it by both of them for some time but have come to expect it.

Why get annoyed with the inevitable? shrug
