I don't like the Beach Boys, and even I can't deny the greatness of "God Only Knows". I don't know this album, but if it follows suit, it is undeniable. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

You know i didn't even listen to this album til a couple of years ago. I could always take or leave The Beach Boys. A lot of so called great bands i don't like..ie The Beatles. I know Moonbeam is no great fan either but Pet Sounds really is an astonishing album. It's so immediate but theres so much depth in there and Wilson's voice is perfect. My fave song..I know theres an answer.

Finally a Brian Wilson/ Beach Boys thread on here!
For me, 'Pet Sounds' is one of my all-time favourate albums. A unique blend of '60s pop, folk music, jazz, classical and a couple of great but intentionally slightly cheesy instrumentals. 'God Only Knows' amd 'Sloop John B' are two of the great '60s pop singles. I love the Beatles, but Brian Wilson in his 65-67 prime did alone what it took Lennon, McCartney and George Martin together to achieve - to compose, arrange and produce some of the greatest pop music ever put to tape.Better than Phil Spector. Also, notice, Phil Spector - Pet Sounds - PS is deliberate on Brian Wilson's part. Also, imo you haven't heard 'Pet Sounds' properly until you've heard the stereo remix. There's stuff there you can't hear on the original mono record. Anyone who buys and digs 'Pet Sounds' should also get the excellent 2-fer CDs of Beach Boys 'Today' and 'Summer Days' (and Summer Nights!)' and also 'Friends/ 20/20 (2 fine late '60s BB albums. Oh, and then finish off with the early '70s 'Sunflower'/ 'Surf's Up' 2-fer and you'll have the makings of a good Beach Boys CD collection. Trust me on this. You know, I love my funk and jazz and my Hendrix/ Zeppelin and so on, and Brian Wilson/ Beach Boys may not be slick or 'cool' or whatever BS goes around here at times, but Brian Wilson was and at times still is a great composer/ producer who can move your emotions like no other. 'God Only Knows' is one of the most moving songs ever recorded. Just ask Paul McCartney. And if you're feeling brave after buying some of these, you must get Brian's magnum opus - his 2004 finished version of the 'Smile' album, the great lost album of the '60s. 'Smile' imo crushes 'Sgt Pepper' etc and is one of the masterpieces of 20th century music, up there with George Gershwin and Duke Ellington's extended works etc. After that explosion of enthusiam, I think I'll have a nice lie down.

brian wilson wrote the greatest music of the 20th century in the mid sixties before his mental breakdown...his songs stand up to anything the beatles wrote around that time , your the man, brian
