"The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill"

How do we feel about this record eight years later?

Even though I had already spun it in its entirety several times in the past via Limewire, I received my actual copy of the CD in the mail today... and it was better than I ever remembered. Seriously, not only is there not one bad song in the bunch, but as far as mainstream R&B is concerned, this was probably as close as we came in a LOOOONG time to an honest revival of organic soul music with ear-popping talent to boot. Just... amazing. An epic masterwork that could become a contender for an all-time favorite of mine.

Your thoughts?

With the exception of "Voodoo", yes smile ... but I said MAINSTREAM R&B. Even though Badu, D'Angelo, and Scott have all had a few hits, I still don't consider them mainstream. They're alternative, somewhat underground soul.. Lauryn, on the other hand, sold millions of records. shrug

Somewhat overrated, then and now. Still a GOOD record, though. The one Alicia Keys wants to make but never will.

I don't think the record is any sort of masterpiece, I'm sorry. A lot of people rep it like it is. Just like a lot of people call Jagged Little Pill a masterpiece, so, yeah. That word gets thrown around way too much these days.

I like a lot of the songs and love a few, but it hasn't made me love it like most classics do. redface

I thought it was very good, but I'm still partial to "The Score". But she had 2 of the biggest records of the decade with those.

They certainly are among the biggest and most acclaimed, yes.

I like The Score a lot, but damn if that "One time! Two time!" nonsense doesn't almost ruin my enjoyment of the whole damn album! lol It's only in one song, but I think of it the whole album through.

An album must be perfect all the way through to be a masterpiece. Neither of those albums is.

I recognized this album as a classic for a long time.

But then I listened to it again, like, this year and didn't feel the same.
