Z Cult "Sound A Like Song Of The Day"/Black Magic Woman/Do It Again As much as I know these two great and very cool songs by these two great artists, Santana and Steely Dan, still to this day, everytime I hear "Do It Again", I think it's Santana. It's only when I hear the vocals of this song do I realize it's Steely Dan. Man, not only did Steely bite off of Santana's overall sound, but even more specific, they took a HUGE chunk out of Santana's song "Black Magic Woman". Not surprising, being the two songs are only a year apart. Of course Santana hit first with "Black Magic Woman" in 1971 from the brilliant album "Abraxas". Donald and Becker OBVIOUSLY dug the hell out of this to the point of basically re-doing the song with a new title, "Do It Again", which came out in 1972 from their debut album "Can't Buy A Thrill". The only thing missing is Carlos's signiture guitar playing. One thing I will state is how "modern" "Do It Again" still sounds. It doesn't have that "dated" sound to me at all. Take "Reelin' In The Years" for example. As much as I dig that song, one of my faves actually, it does sound like it was cut in 72. Whereas "Do It Again" sounds as if it was cut much later, for some reason. Anyway, this song's intro tricks me everytime into thinking it's Carlos. Who else hears this? in the 70's alot of artists kind of mimicked each other the older u get the less current output can be appreciated | |

lol..B you are truly my kindred spirit. As a kid (for a long time) I thought "Do It Again" was Santana. Maybe it's the percussion or the vocals but it truly does sound like Santana from 1974. But they are both great songs. | |

I don't own any Santana outside of a greatest hits that I don't listen to all that often, so I had to listen to them one after the other. Similar bass but outside of that, to my untrained ear, I don't hear a lot of similarity. | |

They would do that once in a while,, but if you remember, they actually got into trouble when they did it with Keith Jarrett's "Long As You Know You're Living Yours" for the Gaucho intro... they got sued, and now most of the Gaucho CD reissues have to have a Keith Jarrett credit somewhere (he also gets some of the royalties, of course).... ...
