How? The sound they've cultivated is most definitely theirs. Plus, they took risks with Achtung, Baby, Zooropa and Pop. I agree, although this is the second time bt11 has listed U2 in a hater thread, so he obviously doesn't like them. U2 are noted for changing their sound with nearly every album.

I think people hear something like 'Beautiful Day' or 'City of Blinding Lights' and completely forget that this band also put out 'Numb' and 'Lemon'. I think that putting out some of their more classicist works lately has made people forget about all of the experimentation of the 90's. Nowadays, people don't realize what a complete and utter shock it was to have 'The Fly' follow 'All I Want is You' in the U2 cannon. Coming after 'Rattle and Hum', 'Achtung Baby' was a huge stylistic jump for the band. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

I love those guys, but they had a formula, and they stuck to it like flies on shit. It worked for them, though, so who's complaining? Those are the first guys I thought of.

David Hasselhoff. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

im not even going to bother posting a responce cause far too many people are just posting artist they dont like rather then actually addressing the true question being posed here..
shoot...i guess eventually someone is going to claim bjork, grace jones or nina hagen dont have an ounce of avante-garde in them ehh? Space for sale...

Doesn't it depend on what you actually define as avantgarde? If you take as avantgarde what is often defined as such, the art music of the 50's, 60's and 70's with people like John Cage or Stockhausen, then I think almost no one of the pop scene will qualify as avantgarde (with few exceptions). Just think of the famous piece 4'33 by John Cage (if that is known around here)...
