Peabo Bryson disses John Legend allhiphop.com/rumours
A few of my AHH buddies went to see Peabo Bryson and The Whispers live at the Newark Symphony Hall in New Jersey over the festive Mother’s Day weekend. Well, Mr. Bryson, who is a legend without question, let John Legend (and these other young whipper snappers) have it. “John legend is never going to be doing what I can do,” Peabo said of the G.O.O.D. Music artist. He then said that there were only about a half-dozen current performers that could even sing a lick. At the same time, he propped up old schoolers like Jeff Osborn, James Ingram, Luther Vandross, Al Jarreau and others. He said something like he's not ego driven, but God has an ego and blessed him. He then sang his a** off for the crowd, garnering a standing ovation. But, why diss John Legend…why not somebody that really has no talent? They're just ordinary people, Peabo, take it slow on them!
man its not even that serious Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...

I hate when people feel that they have to diss others to feel good. If you're that damn good, let others recognize it on their own! We don't need your damn help! I just saw him on a late night informercial selling 70s mood music. Gimmie a fuckin' break.  | |

Now let's be real. Just because somebody IS the shit deosn't mean the general public or anybody else for that matter will recognize it. And let's face it, when it comes to vocalizing, Peabo Bryson is a bad muthafucka. Just listen to that voice on "It's Impossible" & deny it. As far as the infomercial, at least the cat ain't strvin' or on welfare. His ass is out workin'. | |

basically and i seen them commercials too, get annoyin after a while Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...

I kinda feel what he's saying but to single out John Legend, of all people, just makes him seem like a jealous hater.

Of ALL PEOPLE, why John Legend????? Legend is an awesome performer. Anthony Hamilton as well. If it wa someone like MUSIQ SOULCHILD, I could understand!!!!! Peabo is one of the greats of 70's soul, though. I heard my share growing up, blaring outta my Mom's 8-track player!!!!! | |

I think one of the reasons John Legend shines so brightly is that his contemporaries aren't getting the production value that he is. I think John is a great vocalist but I don't believe that if he'd come out in the 80s that he would shine like he does now. He's the modern day Lionel Ritchie to me. If vocalists like Reuben Studdard, Jaheim, Bilal and Rhasaad Patterson were getting the "classic" treatment, they would probably outshine John by a longshot. Still, he's got something special and Peabo has had his time in the limelight. Let the young brotha do his thing. | |

Peabo is too talented to diss other people. He shouldn't have to be that petty. The man has been sounding good since "Crosswinds" and "I'm So Into You" before he became the voice of Disney. Let these new people have their blessings and success. There is enough for everyone.

I have to agree with Peabo.
John Legend is really nothing special...nothing at all. He plays a little piano, he sing a little here and thre but his voice is flat and his songs are extremly boring. Really I know people that marvle at his skill of singing AND playing at the same time. Plus he can play 2-5-1 progression--brava!. That is why Peobo attacked John in my opinion. It's not the songs that brought back Charlie Wilson but marketing and association with Justin Timberlake. BTW Being relevant to contemporary audience is really nothing to brag about...actaully it is quite regrettable in many cases. I say this as someone who didn't see the big deal about JL's album when it dropped:
He's a talented man who managed to hold down a GOOD job while pursuing his dream. We all should be so blessed. I don't care for some of the album's cuts, but he's a solid act. Shame Peabo felt the need to do that. Doesn't do him any favors. | |

Only thing that annoys me is that although John Stephens knew it was pretentious , he still decided to call himseld " Legend " before he had even scored in the charts .

After reading this, it's hard to discern what in the world Peabo's purpose was in saying it. So John Legend isn't all that. Who friggin' cares? Tell us something we didn't know. Why single cats out? I'm not even a fan of John Legend, but the dude at least appears to be making some positive stuff. What I always loved about Luther was that he was quick to tell you who he loved, but I don't remember him ever calling people out by name in a negative way. It ain't necessary. Peabo's got one of the cleanest, clearest voices in the universe. Let your instrument do the talking, patna. All this skepticism towards the current generation comes off as childish insecurity. | |

Agreed....and I also feel the same way about younger artists who are publically disrespectful to those ceame before them....it demonstrates immaturity and insecurity on both sides of the generation gap, if you ask me  | |
