Listen I'm not Gay but Vanity was Beautiful and Sexy and she really was the Princess in Prince's life. I think no other women was as Sensual as she was and I do believe that she got out of the business Too Soon. She should have stayed around and worked with other producers and create more music. It seemed after her DRUG and Health problems and Broken Relationships she Just said the Hell with It and Hollywood and Gave Up. I really would have liked her to do more on film. Action Jackson was a cool film. Under The Influence was a hot song and video. And the Rolling Stone cover with her and Prince is Legendary. It was like you just couldn't picture Prince without his Vanity. She was the other half of him. Together they were WHOLE! I know everybody thinks Mayte was his other half his Soul-Mate but she wasn't and their Divorce proves it as does her choice in Men. She's Sleezy. Likewise Carmen. Prince needed a Class Act. But too Bad for Vanity that she was so messed up on drugs back then , because she would have been with him through Thick and Thin. I am convinced. They should do a Spiritual Album together.

One fan wrote that he saw Vanity snorting Coke in a hotel lobby and then she went down on him . Implied she was a whore and maybe this is where Darling Nikki came from. Prince was talking about Vanity being the Sleezy girl masturbating in the hotel lobby. Could this story possible be TRUE?

I've never heard of that story. But I remember reading one of her interviews where she said that she slept with both men and women for money so that she could buy her drugs when she wasn't acting.

I also read what Nikki Sixx said about her in that Motley Crue book: The Dirt"

One day, the video for Vanity 's "Nasty Girl" came on the air, in which the three girls in the band rubbed themselves suggestively as they sang. As a prot駩 of Prince's, the band's leader, Vanity, seemed to come from such a different world than mine. "It would kind of be cool to fuck her" I told Jesse. [Jesse was a personal assistant of Nikki Sixx].

"Go for it, cowboy," he told me.

I called our management office and told them I wanted to meet Vanity. They called her managers and within a week, I was on her way to my apartment in Beverly Hills for our first date. The second she opened the door, she fixed me with a crazy stare. Her eyes seemed like they were about to whirl out of her skull, and I knew before she even spoke a word that she was completely psychotic. But the again, so was I. She invited me into her apartment which was only a few rooms cluttered with trash and clothes and artwork. Her house was full of weird posterboards with magazine clippings, egg cartons, and dead leaves glued to them. She called these things her artwork, and each one had a story.

"This one I call the Redeemer," she said, pointing out one messy collage. "It depicts the prophecy of the angel descending on the city, for he will come to redeem the souls trapped in the bulbs of streetlamps and the little piggies will walk down the street and the children will laugh."

That night, we never left the apartment. After the girls I had corrupted, it was time for one to corrupt me. The artwork, she eventually admitted, was something she did after staying up for days freebasing cocaine.

"Freebasing?" I asked. "I've never really done that the right way before."

And so I fell right into the Spider's web. Stuck on freebase, I lost what little remained of the self control I had been practicing since rehab and became a completely dysfunctional paranoid."

Our relationship was one of the strangest, most self-destructive ones I've ever had. We would binge together for a week, and then not see each other for three weeks. Or, while smoking crack, she would lecture me about how drinking Coca-Cola was bad for my stomach lining. One afternoon when I was at her house, a dozen roses from Prince arrived with a note saying "Drop him. Take me back." At the time, I fell for it, but now I think she was just manipulating me. Prince probably never sent her any flowers.

Other times, I'd be at her apartment and she'd send me out for orange juice. When I returned, the security guard wouldn't let me back in.

"But I was just here," I'd say, completely confused.

"Sorry, sir. Direct orders. You can't come in."
"What the?"

"If I were you, I would just split anyway. I don't know what all goes on in that apartment, but I don't ever want to know."

One of her neighbors eventually told me that she'd have a dealer waiting around the corner, who would bring her bricks of coke to cook up as soon as I left. She'd hide it from me not because she was embarrassed about the extent of her habit, but because she was worried I'd smoke it all.

One night, Vanity asked me to marry her. I said yes just because I was fucked up, the idea was surreal, and it was easier than saying no. The relationship was just about drugs and entertainment, not love or sex or even friendship. But when she was fucked up in an interview, she told the press we were engaged. She always found a way to make my life as difficult as possible"

Early in the "Girls, Girls, Girls" tour, I stopped dating Vanity. Whenever she came out to meet us, she'd annoy me, the rest of the band, and the road crew by riding a bicycle around the stage in the middle of rehearsal or doing something else obnoxious. It wasn't much of a relationship anyway, and the drugs had caused her to lose a kidney. She was even starting to lose her sight and hearing. I found out years later, though, that she turned herself around. She cleaned up, found God, became a reverend, and changed her name back to the one her mother gave her, Denise Williams.

---

Nikki must still be on the drugs, its Denise Matthews not Williams! Anyway that account was around 1986 when she was filming the truly terrible movie Never Too Young To Die (I also checked out her co-star's Gene Simmons (who played an evil he-she ROFLAMO) autobiography to see if he had mentioned Vanity and all he said was that he "enjoyed" flirting with her and John Stamos)...by then her drug problem is getting way out of control, one year after she presented Prince with the best album award as the 1995 AMAs. I wish I had pics of his reaction when he saw her (you could tell that he still had feelings for her and visa versa). Does anyone remember that show?

Those christian groups don't give a flying fuck about her! Sure there maybe a handful who are honest hardworkin people who have helped people in need. But the majority are like leeches picking on vulnerable people for money and property, especially old folk with no family to leave their assests too!

Now going back to Vanity's career. IMO she could have brought Purple Rain to a another level had she stayed cause it was her life up there and she had a major imput in the movie's development. Who agrees with me?

I do! She'll always be the girl!

A little known fact:

Monica Lewinsky was listening to this track on her walkman while performing fellatio on ex-president Clinton in the oval office... she later said that she found it quite ironic how things turned out.

Yes,short cake he's looking for his other-half. He's looking for the woman that truly understands him and can relate to him and give him what he needs and it might have been Denise at 1 time but not anymore. He needs the 1 that ignited the Fire inside of him. He needs lots of Fun. He needs that thing ,that thing ,that th...ing. Certain something.

oh yeah, I remember this "timeless classic"..

To me, the irony about Vanity's solo career-
such as it was-
was that she seemed to sing better & do better music with each album , though the public seemed to lose interest in her "slutty" image..

"Pretty Mess" was just that-
a mess.

She later did a duet with Morris Day, "Mechanical Emotions" which was considerably better than "Mess"..

after that, she did "Under The Inlfuence" which, if I recall correctly, was the name of the album & the song. On the cover of "Influence," Vanity is uncharacteristically "glamourous"- no see-through lingerie, no thong, etc..
maybe her attempt to "clean up" her image with "Influence" confused &/or turned off people..

at the risk of taking a shot at Vanity-
I mean, Denise-
it looks like hers was a case of an attractive woman being in the right place at the right time (with Rick James & then Prince) who took advantage of the situation (as most would) & then, when the smoke cleared, her talent level was revealed for what it was..

for each of you to determine that talent level,
should you be so inclined..

if a girl answers..
don't hang up!

"Under The Influence" was a great song! It was the first single from Vanity's second album 'Skin On Skin',which was released in early 1986.Motown really supervised the making of this record, making sure Vanity didn't embarrass them with another 'Wild Animal/Pretty Mess' disaster...lol...in 1988,Vanity recorded two great songs for her movie 'Action Jackson'.The songs "Undress" and the excellent "Faraway Eyes" were produced by Jesse Johnson. These songs should have jump-started her recording career but they didn't.

Being a huge fan of the MN sound (Vanity 6, Sheila E, The Time, The Family etc) I got to say that Pretty Mess wasn't the worst song that Vanity has ever recorded...I think "Strap on Robbie Baby" was the worst.....probably the worse song ever! Both the lyrics and Vanity's vocals were really embarrasing (though you got to commend her for endorsing safe sex LOL). Which brings me back to my earlier post...its not that Vanity couldn't sing...she just needed someone like Prince to bring out the best in her, and the majority of the stuff she recorded....well its wasn't any good (except for Under The Influence, Skin on Skin, Mechanical Emotion, Faraway Eyes, Samuelle and 7th Heaven). Its a pity we will never get to hear her third album which was rumoured to have both Jesse Johnson and Jam & Lewis as her producers.

I think its pretty cool that alot of us here can remember some of the things Vanity got up to after she abandoned Prince in 1983.....remember the backlash she copped when she compared her dad to a gorilla (she had a thing for gorillas....eg. Tanya's Island and the King Kong line in Purple Rain just before Prince and Apollonia got it on)? Ah those were the days LOL Come one everyone share your Vanity memories.

I also founds some more Vanity goodies at a site called "The Prince Pages" that contains alot of articles dating back to the early 80s about Prince and his associates (from Dr Fink to Sheila E). The pictures are cool too (some never before seen!).

Vagina, "Strap on Robbie" is one weird song and her vocals were horrible ROFLMAO

To DavidEyre unless you have kept magazine articles, press clippings and video of Vanity from the 80s...its very difficult to find info, but some of it can be found on along with some of her movies, from Ebay. I've read about the third album from a variety of sources (TV Week interview 88 which I lost) during Action Jackson promotion period where she first revealed that she had a drug habbit, was engaged to Nikki Sixx and said that she might be working with Jam and Lewis on her third album (cause they were old friends etc), The Vanity's Lair site which contained interviews from Playboy to Black Beat which talked about her future projects (but it no longer exits!)and this Vanity club that I visit from time to time. http://groups.yahoo.com/g...ityslair2/ Other than that its like looking for pins in a hay stack...I wish she would release that book....chapter 4 http://www.denisematthews.com/ has been there for months!

I would love to hear the unreleased Vanity 6 recordings. There are enough songs for another album! They could simply re-master the Vanity 6 album and add a second disc of bonus tracks. It could look something like this...

DISC 1---
Nasty Girl
Wet Dream
Drive Me Wild
He's So Dull
If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)
Make-Up
Bite The Beat
3x2=6
Bonus: Drive Me Wild (12" Version)

DISC 2---
"Vibrator" (previously unreleased)
"Sex Shooter" (unreleased Vanity 6 version)
"The Moral Majority" (previously unreleased)
"Extra Lovable" (I read somewhere that there is a Vanity 6 version of this song.I don't believe it's circulating though.Could just be a rumor).
"I Need A Man"(previously unreleased)
"Wet Dream Cousin"(previously unreleased instrumental)
"No Call U"(Might just be a rumor, but I also read that there is a Vanity 6 version of this song too).

Thanks guys I have to dig out the album. Robbie Baby is indeed about a Strap -On Dildo. I remember now she mentioned something about that song. Remember her on American Bandstand? All the guys loved Vanity. When I saw The Last Dragon all of the guys in the movie theater were whistling. She was so Hot. Nobody was hotter from the Prince camp. Absolutely True. She was the Prettiest woman he has ever been with.

My brother thought Prince was crazy for letting Vanity go ROFLMAO. He had a huge Wild Animal poster in his room.
The bottom line is this... Vanity's name, image and style can still be found in movies from Mo Money to The Wood and in artists ranging from Madonna to Foxy Brown.

Whether Denise likes it or not Vanity is the first lady of the MN sound, that will last forever!!! Did you know that she tried to get the club shut down last year cause she felt it hurt her credibility as an evanagalist ROLFAMO, yet whenever she goes and visits churches etc they promote her as the "artist formally known as Vanity" LOL http://groups.yahoo.com/g...air2/...go and read all the old posts from there LOL its a crack up.

What club was she trying to shut down? Why do they promote her like this? Does she want to be promoted like that? Is she looking for some of that Old Glory you think? That she felt was rightfully hers? Yeah ,but what could Prince do she left Him? Stuck him with an album and a movie . She had a contract with Berry Gordy. she wanted Motown. Her dream was to be a serious singer, but how could that really be after Vanity6. I really missed that whole concept he had it was so cool. I think it also could have been too far ahead of it's time.

I'm referring to The Vanity's Lair club http://groups.yahoo.com/g...ityslair2/ last year Denise and her "people" were sending letters to blaqueknight200 (who is one of the moderators and and is an expert on funk music) and sweettoti (who also had a very cool Vanity site, but shut it down cause she was sick and tired of the harrasment), and saying some weird shit that they will be "punished by god" if they keep this site open. One of my friends who had her e-mail address sent Denise a letter explaining to her that we meant no harm talking about her career as Vanity, and you should have seen the reply she got...a whole bunch of sermons and a lecture about the bible! Denise has become a bible thumper in a major way.

Since then Sweettoti has a new site which incorporates some info from her Vanity site and new info about the Mary Jane Girls....go and check it out http://popstarr.tripod.com/v6_new.html

Its freaky shit alright...going back to the Denise threats...you see she found out about the site cause she said in one of her letters that one of her associates was looking for info about her on the web and "stumbled" onto the site and found all the nudie pictures in the photo thread (from Playboy). At first we were excited cause it was like "OMG we got an e-mail from Vanity!!! ahhh but then those letter got ugly and we were like...shit Vanity has been brainwashed by the do-godders christian groups who rip off vulnerable ppl cause some of the passages she used...aren't in the bible! and now she is after us...her fans!

When I hear that song I know it has to be about Prince...the way she sings it is sooo obvious as well as the Prince and the Showgirl line. As dumb as some as her lyrics were...you can definately tell that most of the songs on her albums were about him .Even years after they broke up like that JET aritcle I posted on this thread, she still talked about him...and in a positve way. Even last year during the Extra interview when it was sooo fucking obvious that the journalist WANTED to blame Vanity's drug problems onto Prince... she defended him.
