Now, I have heard music by all the these artist and liked them very much, but have never owned a disc by them. I want to get all of these artist, one by one, but which artist would be a good place to start at.

Going by your list, I would say start with Ready For The World. They had the most jams of the artists on your list.

This group included the talented writers duo LA. & Babyface .
Their debut-album ( 1983 ) on Solar Records had solid tracks like Body Talk / Street Beat ( title track ) / Video Villain and Workin 9 to 5
In my memory there were about 3 or 4 more albums after that ( 1985 / 1987 / 1990 / ? )
My personal choice would still be their Street Beat debut

The titletrack was done a year later again by Miles Davis on his You're Under Arrest album .

James Williams continued to release records as James "D-Train" Williams .
These albums were Miracles Of The Heart (1986 ) and In Your Eyes ( 1988 ) .

The jets are awful

If you're speaking in terms of soul like " classic soul " ... it was another time but there still was put soul in some of those jams .
Especially D-Train has put some deep vocals in his work . That was not totally " cold " lifeless energy like you stated .
