The Wiz

I was watching "The Wiz" the other night and realized how much I love that movie (the NYC backdrop is fantastic!), but also how much I really don't like Diana Ross as Dorothy. The next day, I listened to the original Broadway play soundtrack and wondered why they didn't just put Stephanie Mills in the film. She has a waaay better voice than Diana Ross, but of course, Diana was dating Quincy Jones at that time and he did produce the film....anyway, if they re-made the film, what would be a good cast? Honestly, who could fill Micheal's straw-filled scarecrow shoes(because I don't think anyone wants to see a modern day Michael replay the role confused ), Nipsy Russell's tin man, Ted Ross' lovable lion, or even the late great Richard Pryor's small but very out of the norm performance as the Wiz. Any ideas on a great new cast to revive this masterpiece?

I always thought Diana was a bit long in the tooth to be dorothy.

As for a remake i think Billy Dee Williams would be a great Wiz.

I've been wanting to write the script for the remake for some time now so I've had this cast in my head for about 5 years now:

Dorothy - Lauryn Hill (Triple threat: rapper, singer, actor)
Evilene - Mo'Nique
Tin Man - Brian McKnight
Scarecrow - Usher
Lion - Gerald LeVert
The Wiz - Chris Tucker
Glenda The Good Witch - Patti LaBelle
Miss One - Teena Marie

You have to use artists that have also acted. Don't know much about Mo'Nique's singing but it's all good for a V.O. L-Boogie would be the best Dorothy because she can do all 3 and the new The Wiz would have to include some Hip Hop vibe to it for it to be viable for all ages and tastes. Jamie Foxx would be a good Tin Man though, but I don't think he'd do the film.

Other than Usher (I've been sick of his MJ impersonation for quite some time) that's a good cast list, too!

The Wiz is one of my favorite movies for sentimental reasons. I cant imagine anyone but Ms. Ross playing Dorothy in this film.

That's a good cast. I would replace Usher with Bizzy Bone. Long story for my reason. Trust me he would make a good scarecrow. Tin Man --Martin Lawrence--
because he's so crazy!

At the time Diana was a movie star and Mills wasnt...it was hard enough getting a black film made (well, it still is) let alone a huge and expensive musical without a star.

Yeah, I can see that being a concern, but if some remember, he did have a recurring role in the TV show "Sister Sister" so you never know.

This film has become almost like a cult film, considering at the time of it's release it was savaged by the critics.

I've always felt what spoilt the film was Diana Ross protrayal has Dorothy. Even though Stephanie Mills was not as well known as Diana at the time she wasn't exactly a nobody either and she should have taken the role.

The Wiz always annoyed me for some reason... neutral especially when Lena Horne couldn't cut her song off and kept prolonging it....i dunno maybe it was the costumes...something about the movie i just can't get with.

falloff your casting is quite hilarious!!! why does Aretha have to be the evil witch and Patti the good witch? are you implying something...falloff i always would envision Tina Turner to be the evil witch, since she was the evil queen in that Mad Max movie....

folks...mills was a nobody...cara was a nobody...they needed a bankable actress and supposedly Ross was the only bankable black actress at that time...and even her career crash and burned after The Wiz...its hard getting black films made today so think about how hard it was in the late 70's. Ross was a superstar back in the day. Sure she was miscast. But in return we got a big budget black musical...Isnt it the only big budget black musical ever made? So it took an older actress with star power to get the thing made...

and its not like they tried to pass her off as a kid (like the play does)...they set the premise up well by making her a teacher.

wasn't too hot but he played it off though. "Slide some oil to me" was
the song Nispey performed by himself. If you call that singing..hurry get me a record deal now!!!!! lol cool I have a nice voice though. wink

being on broadway and being on electric company does not make one a star. based on your assesment Vivan Nixon (Broadway Actress) and Christine McGlade (Moose from You Cant Do That On Television) are stars ehh?

Lets try to maintain a level of perspective here...compared to Ross, Cara and Mills were nobodies. Sure they had a nitch market but nationally, they were nobodies. Sure a few years later Cara would garner a lil bit of stardom but never anything that would make her bankable or open a film..
