Hey Heartbeatocean....you coming out here for the San Jose shows?

I'm pretty sure. I'm looking for a ticket I can afford, but I can't imagine missing it. The last show was the cause of my "conversion". lol lol

Didn't you say it was your husband that got you to go?
Speaking of straight Madge fans people..... okay i'll stop. razz

I've seen these arguments again and again, so I am noticing a trend among people on the board and reactions I've seen from my friends and even myself that Madonna provokes. She can be intimidating and many people are uncomfortable with her level of success and antagonistic to it. If you want to wrap yourself up into my response and get defensive, fine.

But it does seem like you have some kind of problem with her taking opportunities. Opportunist? Of course, she's opportunist. How would she have become a big pop star otherwise? That's like saying rain water is wet. Why is that a bad thing?

Also, I have no idea what you are saying when you call her hypocritical. Can you please break this down? I'm not attacking, I'm simply curious what you mean by that.

I think Isel means (I could be wrong) that Madonna is full of contradictions in her image and what she preaches. Like "don't be materialistic"...but here I am charging 350 a pop for concert tix so I can spend 100 grand a year on Pilates sessions. She also claims to be always having a message...yet with her "AL" video she pulled it at the last minute when her message was the strongest and most relevant it's probably ever been. She also used to profess safe sex and AIDS awareness...but then was so sexually promiscuous in her image with the "Sex" book. There are a ton of paradoxical and contradicting images/messages in her career history and it can be interpreted that she is a hypocrite in that sense.

Interesting. hmmm

Not only was it my husband, but my husband who happens to be half Egyptian, half Sudanese, recent immigrant, Muslim. Not exactly a stereotypical Madge fan. lol He's pushing me to get tickets this time too, and when he makes up his mind about something, he's SERIOUS.

He also has a thing for John Travolta. lol

Hey dudes and dudettes!!

I forgot to quote, but heartbeatocean asked for some examples.

Earlier in this thread I cited three:

1. Madonna's comment in London about the stupidest Brits being smarter than any American. Well, I just found that a little hypocritical since she just finished the American leg of her Re-invention tour. I wouldn't think that she would make that statement to an American audience who just paid big bucks to see her perform. I would also say then that it's an example of her being a little opportunistic because if she really feels that, well she just sold a bill of goods to her American audience, and because she happened to be in London made that statement to endear her to the audience or something??

2. Madonna's statements concerning her opinion that television is not worth watching. Well, I find that a little hypocritical since her claim to fame is really more of a music-video artist. MTV was a huge tool in creating Madonna.
Sooooo I also find that a bit opportunistic and additionally hypocritical because even though she doesn't respect it, she used television to promote herself.

3. Also in a recent article she said she stayed on the thin side because Guy preferred carve-out women. Well, I thought that was a little hypocritical because I read an article in which Madonna said that Americans, in particular, are afraid of strong women, and she is regard as a strong woman, so Americans are afraid of her? I mean, she doesn't really sound very strong to me if she is allowing Guy to dictate how she looks?? So it seems to me that she does her share of placating.

4. Opportunistic: other than the previous example above, Madonna seems to take advantage of trends rather than really creating her own. She also seems to have taken advantage of some of her friends then dropped them at her convenience. I don't if that's true, but that's just the way it appears. I have another more concrete example, but I KNOW for a fact that posting it would cause a major war, so I'm gonna refrain.

Now let's talk about the real news: I just read on AOL that Britney Spears confirmed that she was pregnant again! I don't know what to say about that.

I'm just playin'.

Thanks. I haven't followed Madonna closely enough to be very familiar with her thoughts and quotes, so it's interesting to reflect on these things. But I have to consider...isn't it all just a big act? Does anyone seriously take her confrontational and obnoxious statements seriously? giggle

And to the other poster who says Madonna represents a narrow view of womanhood -- I disagree to the extreme. And come on.....eek Does M really let Guy dictate how her body looks? exclaim If a woman wants to please her husband and look good and CHOOSES to do so is this somehow a cop-out? disbelief NOT TO MENTION THAT HER BODY SHAPE IS INTEGRAL TO HER SELF-DETERMINED CAREER AS A PERFORMER AND A DANCER WHO NEEDS TO BE IN SHAPE... falloff

Women - especially women with successful careers - in this culture must go up against double standards and will be judged harshly no matter what choices they make. Unbelievably, Madge has made those contradictions work to her advantage. thumbs up!
