This 70s/80s funk group I just heard about?

Hell, yes! Start with the first and work your way up. A few of their albums have recently (finally!) been released as double albums sets to CD. Their sound changed from when they first started out as sort of Ohio Players wannabes, and they came into their own as a great soul funk outfit. Paligap will gladly fill you in on the particulars; they're his favorite.

I second that. Classic funk at it's best.

They wrote some pretty lackluster jam type songs. Better to listen to better stuff.

Start with the "Stellar Fungk" compilation and expand from there. That way, you get a taste of what was known & if you dig it, you can get deeper.

They unleashed Great, Powerful, Monster Funk in their heyday, from 1977-through about 1983...but after that, they...uh...began to 'Slide'...(IMO, I'd avoid any of their independent albums done in the late 80's through the late 90's...)

But I agree with the others, start with the Stellar Fungk: The Best of Slave compilation, and move from there--"Stone Jam"(1980) was their best album, in my opinion...."Just a Touch of Love(1979)" was great too, but hasn't been reissued as a CD yet...their first album, Slave(1977), is available, though, as well as "Hardness of The World"('77), "The Concept"('78)(another great, raw Funk/Rock album), Stone Jam, Showtime('81), and Visions of The Lite('82)...all of those are Slammin', but it gets shaky beyond that...

That Best Of is Kool, because it also features some Steve Arrington's solo hits...and Party Lights: More of the Best also includes Aurra(another Slave -Off-Shoot) and their hit, "Are You Single"....

( As a Slave-adept i preciate the last 2 tracks especially ... this album had some clear,different loudness & rawness than other releases around that time .
For example , in " You Got The Power ... " trombonist/percussionist Floyd Miller plays some amazing fast timbala solo )

The title of their first independent release ( Unchained At Last ) was a clear sign and literally a freedom-release from the Cotillion Records company , which had left poor salaries for the Jam-Patrol.
A friend of theirs had started Ichiban Records , whom they finally got payed from .

One of my favorite classics which i can recommend is " Steal Your Heart " from the Showtime album ( their peak imo ) .
It contains great arrangements with a full orchestra behind it .

Steve Arrington's solo-work was mentioned above too .
His debut-album with the Hall Of Fame band has luckilly been remasterd on cd by Rhino ....very recommended .

Slave/Aurra member Steve "The Fearless Leader" Washington released 2 albums ( solo + Civil attack ) with his (ex)wife Sheila Horne , who was part of the Brides Of Funkenstein .
Steve could play a lot of instruments too .
He recorded that backspin-bass on Clinton's " Do Fries Go With Shake " which he also produced . And his slamming bass on the duet " Hey Good Looking " ( Clinton & Vanessa Williams )
In the same year he produced the album for Jimmy G(iles) & The Tackheads .

I have their Greatest Hits CD and their 1981 album 'ShowTime' on vinyl.They were a superb funk/R&B band."Slide" has got to be one the hottest,sweatiest,funk jams of all time.That endless guitar solo is just outrageous! That song is wicked.
