I would always open with the countdown on the instrumental side of The Jonzun Crew's "Space Is The Place".....

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6.....5, 4, 3, 2...1 (explosion)"

After the explosion, my opening song would always be Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music White Boy".

My closing song would usually be the typical "Last Dance" by Donna Summer. Although, sometimes I might close with "Till Tommorrow" by Marvin Gaye.

I love your picks, especially the instrumental countdown! If I was going to close with DS, I would probably pick "Dim All The Lights".

Opener: I Came to Play - Paul Jackson Jr.
Closer: We're A Winner - The Impressions

The opener establishes a definite purpose with its hard groove/memorable melody/title.
The closer celebrates the fact that the eclectic playlist got on somebody's airwaves.

"De Kleeer Ting" by Kleeer is another great jam that starts with a countdown. It's just according to what mood I'm in for the particular day as to what I would open with. If I'm feeling spacey type funk like "Planet Rock" or "Play At Your Own Risk", I might start off with the instrumental of The Jonzun Crew's "Space Is The Place" and let it play all the way through. Another one I might start off with in that same mood would be "Al Naafiysh (The Soul)" by Hashim that starts with....."It's Tiiiiime....."

A good opener for a funk mood would be Midnight Star's "Freak-A-Zoid"... "Freak-A-Zoids, robots, please report to the dance floor" or Prince's "1999"...."Don't worry, I won't hurt you....". To start a slow set, Midnight Star's "Slow Jam" is always a good one.


If I was going to close with DS, I would probably pick "Dim All The Lights".


That's a great ending song I never would have thought of. It would also be a good song for ending a slow set and going into a fast set, since the song starts off slow and ends uptempo. Cheryl Lynn's "Star Love" is another one. Gloria Gayner's "I Will Survive" would work also but I am sick of hearing that song. lol

It would be kind of like "WKRP In Cincinnati". Johnny Fever always played classic rock and had to have his arm twisted to play a current song but he did every now and then. I noticed in several episodes, Venus would be playing funk one day, disco the next, and jazz the next. I even saw him play rock once. I always wondered what the official format for that station was. lol

The best stations are those without an official format nod IF you're lucky enough to find 'em.
