Chaka Khan - Her son's murder trial

Has anyone heard any news about the trial? I read a quick blurb in my local rag that said Chaka was testifying, but I've not heard anything since.

I feel bad for her and I hope she has a lot of loyal supporters around her at this difficult time.

Singer Chaka Khan testified in court Thursday that her son, who stands accused of killing his friend, is a gentle, kind and compassionate man who she thinks accidentally shot the 17-year-old boy.

In a flared jacket and wearing her hair big, Khan, who testified under her real name, Yvette Stevens, also said she believed Christopher Bailey could have survived if the police had let emergency medical workers enter her Westchester home sooner.

"It was like something out of a nightmare," Khan testified.

The multiplatinum artist became a little emotional but overall remained calm during questioning by Milton Grimes, her son's attorney. She returns to court Monday for cross-examination.

In contrast, her son, Damien Patrick Holland, 27, broke down in sobs as his mother testified after his daylong stint on the stand.

Holland tearfully explained to the Airport Courthouse jury how he never meant to kill Bailey when he jabbed at him with his M-16 assault rifle.

Using a toy gun that replicates the weapon he shot Bailey with, Holland demonstrated how he carried the gun, but then pointed it at Bailey while they were walking to go meet Khan. At that point, he said, Bailey quickly turned around.

"Pow! I heard a shot," Holland said. "I didn't think it came from the gun." He cried hard as he remembered how Bailey fell to the floor bleeding from his face.

Holland said he ran around, pulling at his hair and asking others who were there: "Did I shoot Chris?" Then he looked at Bailey's grandmother and other friends in the courtroom and said: "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to kill him, I swear."

Holland is on trial for murdering the aspiring rap artist Sept. 24, 2004. Khan's son had let Bailey live with him and was helping him make music.

At the time of the shooting, Bailey had come over to Holland's home to discuss an affair he claimed he had with Holland's girlfriend, who is the mother of Holland's daughter, now 5 years old.

During questioning by Grimes, Holland admitted he got friends to lie to the police, and said he made up a story about the gun going off during a struggle in which he was defending himself against Bailey. He had a friend punch him in the face three times to make it look like he had fought with Bailey.

Fuck that shit. You don't need no gun control. You know what you need? We need some bullet control.
Man, we need to control the bullets, that's right. I think all bullets should cost $5000. $5000 for a bullet.
You know why? 'Cause if a bullet costs $5000 there'd be no more innocent bystanders. That'd be it.

Every time someone gets shot, people will be like, "Damn, he must have did something..."
People would think before they killed somebody, if a bullet cost $5000.

"Man, l would blow your fucking head off...if l could afford it. I'm gonna get me another job, i'm gonna start saving some money...and you're a dead man. You better hope I can't get no bullets on layaway."

So even if you get shot by a stray bullet...you won't have to go to no doctor to get it taken out.
Whoever shot you would take their bullet back. "I believe you got my property."

I hear you. But the kid wasn't supposed to have a M16 in the first place. That is not a standard hunting rifel. If a kid can get a M16, then a kid can get bullets, no matter the cost.
