New Teena Marie CD "Sapphire" due May 9th http://www.amazon.com/gp/...528?n=5174
Here's a recent press release for those who may have missed it: New Song "Ooh Wee" From Her Upcoming Album "Sapphire" NEW YORK, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The legendary 'blue-eyed' soulful songstress Teena Marie has the #1 most added song at Urban AC Radio this week. Her sizzling new single "Ooh Wee," is the first release from her forthcoming sophomore album Sapphire, on Cash Money Classics a division of Cash Money Records. The album is a follow-up to Teena's critically acclaimed 2004 album, La Dona, which heralded Ms. Marie's return to the music industry after a 13-year absence. Sapphire, produced by Ms. Marie, is the fifteenth album from the effusive vocalist, who is regarded as one of the most influential R&B female singers of all times. Known for her ability to effortlessly navigate soul/R&B/funk and hip-hop, Teena Marie has also forged many chart-topping collaborations with superstars such as the late Rick James, Common, Gerald Levert and MC Lyte, among others. A multi-instrumentalist herself, Teena Marie has maintained a production- hand in every one of her albums except her debut Wild And Peaceful (1979). The popular songstress and 3-time Grammy nominee has delivered an arsenal of genre defying albums along the way, including Lady T (1980), Starchild (1984), Naked To The World (1988), which featured the #1 classic "Ooh La La," and 1994's independently released Passion Play. Ms. Marie has released 10 compilation albums as well since her stunning national debut on Motown Records in 1979. Known for her tireless and universally acclaimed live performances, Ms. Marie is currently making plans to showcase selected songs on her upcoming album Sapphire, due in stores Spring 2006. That's good news but I wonder if it will be any good? I didn't like her last cd. Too many slow jams and not enuff funk!

Her new song's alright. It's got an old school vibe that I like, but that title? Sounds a lot like it could have been a single from Mariah's last album. That's what came to mind almost immediately. Sometimes I think girl came up with all her song titles when she was like 6 and a half years old (more than likely she held up six fingers and said, "I'm this many years old, y'all") and then wrote the lyrics later when she was an adult. Her titles give me the giggles sometimes:
Ooh Wee Oo La La La Mr. Ice Cream Sugar Shake My Body's Hungry (I can tell, girl) Aladdin's Lamp Honey Call If I Were a Bell

But anyway, I like this song better than anything I heard off of that last stinker she released. It makes me more optimistic about the new album.

TEENA MARIE SAYS NEW ALBUM 'SAPPHIRE' IS DEDICATED TO RICK JAMES
Singer Teena Marie says that her upcoming album Sapphire is dedicated to the late Rick James, her mentor, friend, and occasional collaborator who died in August of 2004. The album is titled after an unreleased song by James. Marie, who celebrated her 50th birthday on Sunday, March 5th, says that she still misses James and hasn't really allowed herself to grieve fully for the punk funk innovator. She told LAUNCH: ["I miss him cursing me out (laughs) a lot, I really miss that, 'cause we loved each other very much but we fought a lot too because we're very different people. Both very, very creative and very respectful of each other's creativity. But Rick was like the total opposite of me. And I was one of the ones who wouldn't allow him to do whatever he wanted to do."] The first single from Sapphire, "Ooh Wee," got off to a strong start at radio last week, something that still thrills the veteran performer. Said Marie: ["It was the most-added record on AC R&B about a week ago, so that was exciting. And they're telling me that it's getting off to a really good start, so this is just the beginning."] Sapphire is due this spring from Cash Money Classics. The new album will be the follow-up to Marie's smash 2004 set La Dona, her first commercially released album in 13 years.

Teena will be off the chain fa sho on this album. She has a power house voice and that stupid and ridiculous comment that was made about the song My Body's Hungry( I can see that) just remember some of the greatest women in music are no sticks. Aretha Franklin, Chaka Kahn, Patti Labelle, Etta James and even Billie Holiday wasnt a stick. So leave Teena alone and let her blow like only she can.

I'm getting it because I'm a fan. Teena Marie is a gifted artist unlike so many others out there nowadays. We have to support the good ones otherwise mediocrity will take over. Hell, it already has...

PREACH! Teena, my favorite female, Prince my favorite male artist. I would quit my job if the 2 toured together, and came to my town and I couldn't get off from work. [Edited 3/11/06 19:56pm] "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

We luuuuuv us some Lady T. don't we?
There'S just something in her music that just takes me back to a really fun, dreamy time of being a little black kid in the 70's and early 80's...Teena, and Minnie Ripperton...if there was ever a film version of my life as a kid comparable to Spike Lee's CROOKLYN....those would be the two women who wouldjust be ALLLLover my underscore !

I wonder why the duet with Rick was removed. That would've been a great selling point.
