The Beatles thread

After borrowing the Anthology docu from a friend, I have recently become very interested in The Beatles and I have most of their albums (the good ones anyway). The albums I have are, Please Please Me, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour (the US version), The Beatles (the white album), Abbey Road and Let It Be. I'm telling you this so hardcore Beatles fans can tell me which albums I'm missing (please note I'm not interested in Let It Be...Naked because I think it's just a bitter act on behalf of Paul McCartney. The album didn't turn out how he wanted so thirty years later he chucked a shit fit).

So what album(s) is your favourite? My favourite is the US release of Magical Mystery Tour, which included singles released in 67 (like Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love) plus the soundtrack songs. I also love Rubber Soul, Revolver, Let It Be (even though most Beatles fans, critics, and the Bealtes themselves hated it) and Help!.

The Beatles are really good shit!

The Beatles are the greatest band of all time! I'm a true fan. I love most of their albums, but my favs are Revolver, Abbey Road and the White Album. The Beatles had an amazing way of harmonizing together and the writing skills of Lennon and McCartney are fantastic! Their music never sounds dated. It's as fresh as it was 35-40 years ago.

Get all their albums. You won't be disappointed.

Just read in Rolling Stone that the Beatles catalog is being given the remaster treatment! It's about freakin' time.

"Magical Mystery Tour" is a very funky LP. "I Am The Walrus", "Strawberry Fields", "Baby Your'e A Rich Man" and "Flying" have some great grooves. George Clinton said that The Beatles were his fave group and they were "funky & poppy" at the same time.

Beatles For Sale is the most underrated album by the fab four...you can just tell Beatlemania was just starting to get on their nerves on this. I am a Loser, Baby's in Black, Mr Moonlight, Follow The Sun, No Reply...all gems that tend to get overlooked. Also Past Masters Vol 1 & 2 are must haves as well.

BTW, I love Let It Be Naked...And this coming from one of the few fans of the original. I like it with and without Phil Spectors input. Just for the stripped down version of Long and Winding Road alone, Let It Be Naked is a masterpiece.

Let It Be... Naked is obviously stronger because they added my favorite Beatles song ("Don't Let Me Down"), but I really loathe the stripped-down version of "The Long and Winding Road." McCartney thinks Spector's strings made the song too sappy. How can the song's writer not see how inherently sappy it is (and I mean that in a good way)? That song is pure cheese of the highest order and the strings fit perfectly.

"With The Beatles" and "A Hard Day's Night" complete the early innocent, high-energy sound. They are much more solid recordings than "Please Please Me" and the songs are much more infectious.

"Beatles For Sale" is the beginning of a much more serious, mellow era for the group (the worn down facial expressions on the cover tell the whole story). However, there is still some of that youthful innocence as well. To me it's probably their most underrated album!

"Past Masters Volumes I & II" are essential!!! They have all the non-album singles besides the ones from "Magical Mystery Tour." Volume I is worth the price for "I Feel Fine" alone. Volume II is loaded with great tracks from 1966 onward and contains the George Martin versions of some "Let It Be" era tracks which are vastly superior to the Phil Specter album versions....when comparing the two it becomes glaringly, painfully obvious that George Martin spoke The Beatles' language and poor old Phil didn't have a clue! In the studio, George Martin is considered the "fifth" Beatle.

"Let It Be...Naked" is a much better package than the original, Phil Specter version. Paul did it justice...it was a job that NEEDED to be done.

After that, then you might want to check out the audio Anthologies I, II, & III.

We don't agree about Spector's involvement, but I have to co-sign this. In particular, "Past Masters Vol. 2" should be the very next CD you buy.
