it's a little choppy on the stream but i would think that because everyone in the damn world is listening. Im almost through with it. It's an alright record for being recorded and written in 3 days.

I think my favorite song is "Roger and Out". I think passing around the lyrics would be the message of this album anyways. Good way to end the record... with "America the beautiful"

What's with the trumpet?

It's strange to have almost every song be overtly political, but there's plenty grist for the mill here. It's not an album that'll convert anyone, I'd say.

Favorite on first listen is the song about consumerism...and the ending 'America the Beautiful' has something haunting about it.

Thanks for posting this!
"I got the devil in me, girl." - 'John the Baptist', Afghan Whigs
"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself."

is it possible to save a streaming audio to hard drive? I am driving to NYC tomorrow and I would love to have this to play on the way.

it rocks, by the way. I was going to wait for the downloadable version next week, but I couldn't....

Neil is simply amazing.

And it's shit.

Boring music - think a Crazy Horse tribute band jamming with a Taco Bell
marciachi horn section - and really fuck-awful, clumsy, stupid, patronising, glib lyrics, all delivered in that mosquito that's lost its sting voice. "Impeach The President" would work as a parody of all the anti-Bush slogans, but the fact that it's delivered with po-faced earnestness makes it unintentionally hilarious. Tom Waits wrote an incredibly eloquent anti-war song on his last album (Day After Tomorrow) and a superb and quite sinister anti-Bush song (Sins of the Father), which say in about twelve minutes what this superannuated hippie still can't quite manage over ten songs and close to an hour.

I hope the Republicans use the last song as their campaign music. lol

I have to agree with my fellow Fall aficionado, Mr. Shapeshifter, and say that this is another musically undistinguished turd from Neil. I'm a big fan, but Neil has been on a fairly miserable losing streak for well over a decade now in my estimation, and this release extends that streak and exacerbates it by being a tone-deaf, boringly strident lyrical embarrassment, completely lacking the wit that marks the most effective political music. It sucks!

But I’ve only listened to it once. I might change my mind. Probably not, though…

Huh?? Are you being sarcastic, I hope?

Anyway, I really like the sound of this album. This is more like the Neil I love than Prairie Wind was. Very immediate sounding and rocking.

Chief? what are we in 1988? "Are you from Bawwwston,Guy? Get the CAAAAHR CHIEF I gotta go to the MAAAHLL TO PAAWND THIS GUYEEEEEYE. He's ASSSKIN FAAAAH A WIIIIIKKKEED BEAAAATIN" (in Jay Mohr voice)

So let me get this straight Neil has lost his singing voice and Tom Waits voice is superb and pristine and timeless? Your whole post is peppered with malice toward Neil Young. Even the "SuperAnnuated Hippie" comment seems like a shot for shot's sake. I really don't think this album is as bad as you say it is. But that's your opinion and that's all it really is and all it will be.

The whole point about this album isn't to be "uber intellectual" or "prose elite lyrical" like Tom Waits the savior. It's to give a voice to protest songs on a mainstream level. Unfortunately Tom Waits isnt high profile although his music does work well on left leaning documentaries such as "The Smartest Guys in the Room".

I know you aren't naive to understand why this album works for the common person. It doesn't stand up to any great achievement that Neil Young has done clearly, imo. But Neil isn't perfect and neither is Mr. Waits. But the point is he put it out there for a reason. And judging by the reaction from it, I think Neil succeeded in what he wanted with this album. Which was to get people talking about the issues that concerned him in the world which were addressed on this album.

BTW your Robert Evans quote is more true than most could ever imagine.

Neil Young isn't "music for the the common person" CHIEF - that would be Eminem or Justin T, or anyone currently selling shitloads of records and getting plenty of airplay, which ole Mosquito throat here ain't.

Point is, every single one of the issues he "raises" here were already discussed and pondered over and filed away when doddery ole Neeeyalll was still sabre rattling for Bush & co. Meanwhile way bolder artists with far more to lose - George Michael, Bruce Springsteen & The Dixie Chicks - were all making anti-war songs and statenments in 2002.

Of course none of those would matter is the album was even a fraction as good as the Bluenotes album of 1988 (his last foray into horn-based music) or even ANY of those contentious and - for the most part - highly undervalued Geffen albums. But it isn't. It sucks and chokes big time. Here's a guy who's written some quite trenchant social critiques in Crime in The City, Ordinary People (unreleased, but hunt it down on bootleg), Rockin' In The Free World, Driveby to name but a few, reduced to bleating tired, hamfisted cliches like he thought of then first. Yo Neeeyall, the revolution hasn't just been televised, Granddad, it's out on fucking DVD.

Damo, you won't change your mind. I've been a big and very forgiving fan of Neeyall's for the best part of twenty years, but he's released exactly one great song on his last three albums (the peerless Bandit), and the last two albums have been execrable. The latest won't grow on you, it'll drop off and find a welcome home in the hearts of people who probably thought Trans was a lost Buggles album.

You're becoming more inarticulate and incomprehensible by the second. See, Neeyall's latest is actually damaging your brain. Go listen to some Kylie instead. That'll put a wiggle in your stride and a smile on your behind. Go dance, go live, go get laid. JUST STOP LISTENING TO THIS SHIT FUCKEN ALBUM!!!! lol

We both like Talking Heads - or maybe you just like the lyrics. Tell me ... are you ... are you ... OH NO! YOU'RE BAAAAACK!

Ok, I've changed my mind - Neil's new album is the best thing I've ever heard since that bootleg I've got of Coldplay doing Ukranian folk songs with Billy Bragg in the EMI lift.
