A Prince classic butchered in a singing contest First of all I want to explain this a little bit.... There's a singing contest in Iceland where the competition is between students from each college in Iceland... And sometimes the contestants go on to be successful singers... This year, The Reykjavik Technical College decided to let the American singer/actor (and student) Seth Sharp represent the school in the competition.... Last year, I saw this guy play a Prince tribute show and he and his band were actually rather good (my review of that show can be found here: http://www.prince.org/msg/2/156375)
This time he performed Purple Rain.... with Icelandic lyrics! (note: The contestants have to sing the songs in the competition in Icelandic)The guy's actually still learning Icelandic.... unfortunately at times I couldn't even understand some of the words, and I'm Icelandic! Also, his singing wasn't nearly as good as it was at the show last year.... but the real shocker was his backing band... Instead of bringing his band from last year's gig or using the default house band (who are actually really good musicians) he uses a band that obviously hasn't practiced the song well enough.... and the guitar playing in this version is just... Well.... You'll be the judge: http://dagskra.ruv.is/str...le=4291627 ... (fast forward to approx. 68 minutes into the show, around the middle of the program) [Edited 4/11/06 18:07pm] | |
