WHO REMEMBERS "SUNDAY NIGHT" W/ DAVID SANBORN? Those of you that know, know that this was the shit back in the day! It premiered around '88 and it was a music show hosted by Sanborn and Jools Holland. It had an eclectic mix of musical guests every Sunday. That was a helluva show and too bad it came and went. TV NEED shows like that to show folk what good programming and good music used to be. This was probably the best variety music show ever.
It ran for 2 seasons, here are the lineups from the shows; just look at the powerhouse artists/groups that were on there! Man, We were Just talking about that series Sunday Night/ Night Music, on NBC...I actually did a couple of threads on it a while back, I used to try and tape all the episodes, but I don't have 'em all...in fact BETonJazz used to air reruns every now and then... They also used the format for a couple of New Years shows a few years back, after Dick Clark, with Sanborn hosting again...this time, they had guests like D'Angelo, Eric Clapton, Jewel, Isaac Hayes, Cassandra Wilson...they were hoping ABC would pick it up this time, as another late night thing, but they chose not to....

Not sure if they still show it, but they had it under its second name, "Night Music".... One of my favorite episodes was Donald Fagen, accompanying artists like Patti Austin, Earl Klugh, and Joe Sample...another Favorite was the show with Todd Rundgren, Pat Metheny, and Taj Mahal...The Curtis Mayfield Show was great, too! and the Bootsy, and Carla Bley...then the Sun Ra show....The Milton Nascimento, James Taylor...Sting with Fareed Haque and Bill Frisell...Miles Davis and Djavan... It's a shame it came on so late, and they always had trouble getting sponsors..
but, Man, Could You imagine having a show like that Now? a place where Van Hunt, John Mayer, Lewis Taylor and Raphael Saadiq could possibly Jam with other artists like Bjork, Marcus Miller, Wayne Shorter, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, David Bowie, Herbie Hancock,Radiohead, Bernie Worrell, Ani DiFranco, Questlove, Qtip, Charlie Hunter, Dwele, Bilal...Music fans would lose their minds!! Of course, that would probably get cancelled too...Most kids raised on Clear Channel wouldn't know who these folks were, and wouldn't tune in  ...

i used to love this show! too bad it was on when i was in high school, i had no idea who most of those people were back then, now that i'm a bit more educated musically, i'd love to see them again so i could appreciate their performances a little more.

The episodes I've seen were all quite good. The show is just music, with occassional interviews. No comedy or any other bullshit. The guests are a varied lot, so your feeling on a particular segment would depend on how much you like the artists involved. There have been DVDs of performances from the show , compiled thematically (such as Music legends, Soul, Hard rock, British music, etc) available in the UK. I sometimes see them in NY stores as Canadian imports , pretty pricey (usually about $40 a disc). They need to release them on DVD domestically. Given the caliber of acts that he's had on (Clapton, mcCartney, Metallica, Oasis, Hole, Page & Plant)I'm surprised that they haven't been put out here #SOCIETYDEFINESU | |

What an cool concept. Pulling together divergent musicians to make some great music.
 What does it say about current attitudes that a show like that can't exist on American TV now?

I remember that one! They started out jammin' on Weather Report/Jaco's "Teen Town", and took a left into a latin groove...Hiram Bullock was just kicking into overdrive when the credits finished and the program ended I was pissed!
