In 1976,Teddy Pendergrass left Harold Melvin and The BlueNotes and embarked on a hugely successful solo career.His second solo album 'Life Is A Song Worth Singing'(released in 1978) is considered his masterpiece.A year later,he released the follow-up,titled 'Teddy' and it's a brilliant album,consistent from the first track to the last.Without question,Gamble and Huff were the greatest R&B producers of the 70s and they supplied Teddy with top-notch songs.Teddy wastes no time....the album opens with the lush "Come Go With Me",one of the most impressive "seduction songs" ever (just ask his female fans,lol).Oddly,the song has a gloomy melody,but it ends with a cool seduction skit,where Teddy is trying to convince a woman to go home with him.Apparently,he succeeds because the next song is "Turn Off The Lights",which seems to pick up where his 1978 hit "Close The Door" left off.

Those two songs were the singles and they are superb but for me,the album really picks up steam with the third song "I'll Never See Heaven Again",a wistful gem that really should have been a single.This song is the highlight of the album,imo.The verses and the melody is mesmerizing.I'm surprised that no other artist has come along and recorded a remake.Other highlights on this album include the funky "If You Know Like I Know" and the clever,sexy dance track "Do Me",another song that could have (and should have) been a single.

I'm a Gamble and Huff fanatic and currently,I am collecting every album that they produced.This album has always been a favorite.I remember in 1979,hearing it on 8-track Any other fans of this album?

My mother LOVED her some Teddy. She WORE this LP out. It got to a point where I would have to leave the room when she put this one on (because I got so sick of hearing it). But looking back, it is a classic LP and Teddy was on top of the world when this came out. He was the "R Kelly" of 1978-79 (without all the controversy). When Teddy yelled "TURN EM OFF!!", that brother meant it. I remember Teddy had a "Ladies Only" concert on TV (live from L.A.-1978) and my mother made sure no-one even touched the TV while it was on. I never saw that many chicks go ballistic over a man singing. They were screaming, fainting, crying, stripping, etc. And dudes were sitting in the audience with ice grills saying nothing.

But yes, David this (And "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" and "T.P.") are some great LP's. And Gamble and Huff put a bowtie on R&B.
