Although I think Shuggie's album has more restless creativity, remember this wasn't Shuggie's first album--

First, there was Al Kooper Presents: Shuggie Otis, then there was Here Comes Shuggie Otis, followed by Freedom Flight and then came Inspiration Information(The Cd version fuses the original "Inspiration" album with a few cuts from "Freedom Flight" album

....I wonder if it might be more appropraiate to compare it to Dirty Mind and Controversy?....

...

i think i'm comparing the 2 because of the 70's vibe, i think most of us know Shuggie's defeat is/was inevitable. lol

biggrin I think it's a great comparison of the two young prodigies!! The interesting thing is though, Shuggie may have had it on prince in age , in terms of the professional young musical prodigy thing---

Shuggie was already a guitar prodigy by age 12, and was already playing in his father Johhny Otis's Blues and Soul Revue--that first Al Kooper presents album was recorded when Shuggie was only 15, and By age 19, Billy Preston called Shuggie to say that the Rolling Stones wanted him to join their band, (to replace the departing Mick Taylor) Shuggie actually turned them down because, in his words "I wanted to do my own thing"....a musical arranger was brought in by CBS in case Shuggie needed some help, But in his words, "I found that I couldn't show him anything he didn't already know...he seemed to have this innate ability to play instruments and compose"....

damn! now that would've been interesting. as we see small decisions like that shape the world as we know it. lol

my dad has a lot of Johnny Otis. he tripped me out when he told me that Johnny wasn't black but Greek and was just trying to pass. lol

i've got funky ass comp by David Holmes titled Come Get It I Got It which has a track by Johnny on it called Country Girl he calls out Shuggie on it and asks him to play some guitar! TIGHT!!! headbang

kinda ironic that Inspiration Information destroyed Shuggies career. lol Can you imagine some of the other stuff he would've recorded if he had the support of his label back then? omg

Xactly!!! If He had just gotten some kind of push and support from Epic, who knows what could have happened ...But they didn't, and they eventually dropped him from the label...he went back to just occasionaly playing blues in his father's band....

Here's some Cospiracy theory info for ya!

accoring to some folks at Epic, Sly Stone (also on Epic) got to hear the Inspiration album, but it was never said what he thought of it...one guy wondered if Sly felt threatened, and maybe had a hand in trying to supress it...
lol probably not...

on the other hand , who knows? Sly was kinda paranoid at that point....hmmm

eek
lol Nah!!!! just speculation for the fun of it.....

Good point, pali. Shuggie was still on P at that stage, (Dirty Mind, Controversy) The ONLY time I would give it to P is on the 1999 album, which was STILL heavily influenced by Shuggie.

From what I've read, Sly was FLOORED and blown away when he heard Shuggie's LP. Sly wanted to Shuggie to tour with him but Sly was missing show many shows by that point so it probably didn't matter.

Oh yeah, player. Shuggie's sensibilty and his mastery over not just playing several instruments, but the control he had over HOW shit was going to sound. Shuggie's understanding of production, his forsight....That is what influenced P more than anything, I feel. As far as the art of recording, I think the 3 main cats P patterned himself after, waaaay more than Stevie, was Todd Rundgren, Sly and Shuggie. And Shuggie patterned himself after Sly.

Well put Brutha B. I agree also that those 3 cats influenced P heavily too. And Shuggie said that when he did "Inspiration", he wanted to be just like Sly and play everything. I remember reading that in a guitar mag interview w/ Shuggie in the 80's.

When I first heard I.I., and read the liner notes, I said to myself, there's the missing link between Sly & Stevie in the early 70's and Prince in the late 70's and early 80's.

getting outta the old moderators' home to get me a po' boy, that's where.

anyways, my thoughts on this whole thing...which joint is better is kinna hard for me to say, because both shuggie and prince had one major thing in common (besides both of 'em having had 'fros that i'm totally envious of): both were way ahead of their time, with the difference that shuggie unfortunately got panned because of that...at the time he was doin his thing, i don't think many folks were ready for that jelly quite yet. sad thing, because shuggie was bad-ass.

i think that both inspiration information and for you are good albums, but i don't feel the need to put one in front of the other.
